Hi all,

My 71 bay has an original 1700 engine that needs a bit of TLC. Every time I dip the clutch (or in neutral if you take your foot off the accelerator it dies)the engine dies as if it is not ticking over fast enough. Any suggestions? when running it sounds sweet and drives great but this is a pain at junctions!!

It does sound to me like a fuel issue if it runs fine the rest of the time, possibly check your fuel filters as there may be more than one or even several filters, if you can get the pipe off the carb first and turn him over (someone else) holding the pipe in a bottle, make sure you is getting a decent squirt of fuel from the fuel pump, I don`t think for one minute it`d be your pump but you need to know the fuels getting there easily. Worth looking at your fuel pipes at the same time  If you ain`t confident, get someone else to do it because we all seen the videos of campers on fire because of dodgy fuel pipes, clamps, tanks, filters, workmanship, etc etc. Old pipes can even block things up when they start to crumble. Next it`s got to be your carb if the fuel is getting that far, worth a little clean out I`d suggest. Check what carb you have and do a little search on here on how to clean it out (I`m rubbish with carbs) but thats my best bet

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,, Points ok ????

if it was a fuel starvation problem it may be worse under load, it could be a blocked idle jet i guess? does the van have a choke fitted? does it run ok on choke if so? or is it something as daft as low tickover that needs adjusting? all these things plus timing need checking, what you say is sweet or normal when driving may not be unless you've driven a few you never know how good/bad your own is sometimes.

Probably an air leak on a 1700. Those solexs really need to be air tight to function correctly and the idle circuit is susceptible to leaks.
Lots of info on the samba about setting these up.

I changed a few perished hoses yesterday as they were literally hosing the engine with petrol. All leaks now sorted but I only changed the visible pipes and clips extra to those leaking. I will post a picture in a short while. I had this problem before changing pipes though. It's probably worth pointing out that this is the first time it's been driven in 2 years.

Don't know about servo or even what a solex is (sounds like a rip off watch)

Where would I find the idle jet?

idle jet is in the carb, air leaks could be a cause as said, did you check all hoses - not petrol ones air ones in and around the carb to the dissy etc?

Here is a photo of the hoses I replaced. As a complete novice I don't know what most things are or what they do. For example - what is the hose labelled 7 and why is it blanked off?

That's not a 1700 !

But i would be looking at the servo hose joining the inlet for a start.

*edit* plus your fuel filter is the wrong side of the pump

if its not a 1700 what is it then? (1600?)

I have just replaced hoses as they were before just to stop the leak - will the filter cause a problem where it is? which bit is the pump (sorry I know that's such a basic question but I am a complete novice).

the picture you posted is of an upright type 1 engine which is possibly 1584cc or 1641cc i guess it may be 1776cc if it's been fettled - i'm not an expert on type 1's - but one thing for sure it's not a 1700.

realistically the fuel filter should be between the tank outlet and the fuel pump so crap can't get into the pump, also the fuel pressure is less there and so there's less chance of the fuel filter splitting - imagine the filter splitting inside the engine bay and dripping on the hot engine, it should really be under the van secured away from the exhaust. to find the fuel pump trace all the pipes from the bottom of the tank along and into the engine bay, mine is electric and on the left side chassis leg - yours will be different i guess as mine is fuel injected

and as i said on your other thread, if you wanna meet up for a bit of a conflab to run you through the basics just holler - you can't be far from me, alternatively get yourself to techenders 13 sept onwards.

Ricky,

I would definitely like to meet up - my van hasn't got an MOT at the moment and I haven't really figured if it would be best to get it MOT'd first so I can drive over to you or if you could come over to look at it with a view to pointing out what its MOT failings may be! (if that's ok with you!?!)

I have so much to learn and need a basic understanding I think before I can even talk to people properly about problems like this engine cutting out. I will PM you my contact details and we can make some arrangements.
