Im having trouble starting the type4 engine i've got in my westy. I know it ran before it left the usa but now im having no luck. I have checked the basics, IE the plugs distributor cap, rotor arm, fuel pump pressure, drained fuel tank/fresh fuel. It will start briefly when i pre-load the barrel of the carb with alittle fuel but then dies immediately. Im thinking there might be a blockage in the twin carbs i have? If you remove the fuel hose from the carb and 'blow' through the fuel inlet into the carb, should there be any resistence, IE can you blow through it? Because its seems im not getting any fuel through to the carb? but when i move the throttle linkage when at rest i can hear some 'hissing' i assume a jet?

Any ideas?

could be an air leak. had it on my webers on my type 1 engine

if it fires up when, like you say preload the carbs with fuel, i.e. chuck some petrol down them, but you get nothing once that petrol has burned off. it sounds like you just have fuel delivery issues.

even with major air leaks you'd get some erratic firing, even with just one carb working you'd get soemhting. but if you're getting asbolutelty nothing, dead you need to confirm fuel delivery etc.

firstly fuel is getting to the carbs, sounds like it is?

blowing into the carb through it's fuel pipe, you should be able to do this. inside there is a float connected to a little valve. when enough fuel gets in there the float rises and shuts off fuel. like a ballcock valve in a gary glitter, yeah? though if they are full of fuel, they might have closed off, so you wouldn't be able to blow through them?

can you see fuel or definately hear (not easy geeting ontop of those carbs) being suirted when you operate the accelerator pump, you mention a hissing, this sounds like they work? will it start by pumping the throttle, so it continually feeds fuel via the accel pumps, this should work. if it does, then sounds like idle jets, capillaries could be blocked?

i'm sure there's stuff i haven't thought of too.
i think you probably need to take them off, dismantle and clean, blow through etc. just as a matter of course?

good luck with it all.

ooh, sorry for the double post, also are the fuel cutoff valves working o.k, i.e. opening etc. also have they got extra emission electrickery on them if they're from teh states? if so is all that cool?

I had an air lock in my fuel pipe from the pump to the carb (Twins in my case). After a few hefty blows of air you could here air at the carb. Started up no problem then. Just a thought
