I have just fitted my Sunpro tacho  and the engine seems to tick over at 500rpm, and follows the engine when i rev it.....so all seems well.......although readings seem slow compared to engine note to me.......need to check it is set for 4cyl not 8cyl or something...just left it factory set :?

I haven't taken it out for a drive yet, will do that tomorrow...I know the answer is a ball of string but what is approx the rev range of the 1600tp

(Vege 1600tp/twin Kaddies/electronic ingnition/BRMs shod in 175/60/15's)

 WANTED

idle is ~850-900
In theory 4500 rpm should be the limit - I think they came with rev limiting rotor arms from the factory they come in 4500 & 5000 rpm flavours.
I'm sure someone will correct me on the rotor arm thing.
Again the theory is that when new you could run it at 4500 rpm all day & max speed was calculated on that basis.

WHS^^^^

Sounds about right to me! Your engine might be idling at about 500rpm, but if that's the case you might want to up it a bit to be safe - does your dynamo light come on at all when ticking over?

;)

agree with Loxy, 4500 max, but I havent seen any trick rotor arms on these engines.

fitting twin carbs is a good move (its what VW did as they needed to improve) it gets rid of those long inlets and the right angle bends, (and I found the idle smoother and lower too)

I once fitted a 1500 silencer to a 1600 twinport, its the same box as the 1600 but has a slightly smaller final exhaust bend and it choked the life out of the engine above 3500, so I suspect you will struggle to go up in revs unless you open the exhaust up too.

and dont forget fan power goes up as the cube of the air being shifted, or speed to a first approximation.

They defo do them as I had one fitted before the rebuild, made me realise that I was ragging the bus a bit hard before cos I kept on hitting the 4.5k limit.
Just not sure whether they were fitted originally.

many thanks for these  ...i shall have a play on the road.....ticks over fine...no genny light at the '500'.....burbles along lovely after a couple of revs on start up..no chokes

.............twin carbs have made a difference :p although i only have 1/2 throtle due to acc linkage issues :? combined with the smaller wheels it sprints around town now

Sits at 50-55mph (chasing BMW Mini speedo) ok, cannot wait to get full throttle 8)

Just a random moment,

My old baja had a rev counter fitted and i found out (2 minutes before an MOT) that the horn wouldn't work unless the revs showed 1000 or above!?!

As you were

...been for a drive...read the tacho instructions...reset it to 4cy not 8cy...works a treat

tick over now, cold 800-1000....... warm (hot hot hot..40mins in traffic after cruise along the duel carrageway at 50mph) 1000-1200.

60 is about 4000rpm...cannot wait to get full throttle

What do you do with the rest of the dial :?: 5" tacho 0 - 10k range.....bus only used 0 - 4k

You change your mindset - and enjoy the smug feeling you get from driving a 'relaxed' motor that's ticking along nicely!!...

... or change your tacho for a 2 cylinder model and pretend it's revving more!!

Glad it's all worked out OK for you...

;)
