Well I got the carb off last night, before I started to strip it down thought I'd double check it was blocked and guess what it wasn't  but what I found as I pumped away  was that the spindle end nuts were damp as though petrol was creeping through, when I checked these there was a small amount of play on the throttle lever side but loads of play on the other side, I cleaned it off and tried again and there was definately petrol coming through, so it looks as though this could be the problem sucking air through.
Once again thanks for all the advice :D 8)

Can be fixed you just need a pair of brass or phosphor bronze bushes, not sure where you can get these someone with a lathe should be able to make you a pair, the you need to drill and ream the throttle shaft drilling in the carb body and press fit the bushes. Should be as good as new again.

Thanks for the links & advice, Hilly_70 on here has a spare set that I'm going to have off him so fingers crossed it will be sorted for the All Types show in a fortnight, I'll update and post a pic or two.
Thanks again, Nick.

Well I fitted the bushes today and took a few pics so I will try and do a how to post tomorrow, thanks for all the help and advice :D Nick.

Good to know your its working out, do you need the kit to set the carb after you get it fitted?

Hi!

Good news! Get yourself a 2nd hand colourtune (ebay) for around 15 quid, and you get then get the mixture properly set up, and a cheapish timing gun (ebay again) for say 20 quid, and your al sorted.

Set your carb up here:

Great resource, just fitted new carb to mine, all set up and working well. My old carb for sale if you wanna do another one?! ;)

Look forward to the pictures!

Cheers!

Hi Ian, I've set it roughly, but I will double check it using "Rob & Daves" instructions. I'll let you know how I get on, are you going to All Types show next weekend ?

Ian, I think Sat is a sort of set up day and the show is on the Sunday.

Hi , as a post script to this thread I replaced the spindle bushes (see How To's) but only just got round to setting it up properly, and I have found that I still have petrol leaking past the spindle. probably seemed ok at first as the grease would have sealed it of sorts I presume.
My question now, is there anything else to try or does this mean that it is finally new carb time ?
Thanks for any advice , Nick.

Sorry to hear that Nick.

It might be that the shaft is worn as well.
I have some parts carbs what type is yours, I will send you another throttle shaft if I have one of the same type (I guess they are the same from 30 pict 1 to 34 pict. PM me with your postage details.

Were the bushes a tight fit into the housing? Did you use any blue hylomar between the bush and the housing, its just an idea that the fuel leak might be around the bush.

uber cool, if I could figure out how to quote would do it, but cant, not having laff

figured if the carb was set up to idle with a leak, and the leaks there all the time, whats different between decel to idle from a run and sitting idling to set up the carb?

Ok, see where your coming from, and now you're made me feel bad

When I had carb icing on other cars its usually when the air temp is low ish and fairly high vilocity of cold air passing over the carb, ie at least doing 30 to 50 mph.

Anyway I know you where only trying to help amd offer solutions, unlike me,

but it does sound like something to do with a weak mixture

:sign0013:

I just dont understand some people....

you offer a helping hand and get harranged for it.....

shame on you Mr Cool
