Sorry to hear that Nick.

It might be that the shaft is worn as well.
I have some parts carbs what type is yours, I will send you another throttle shaft if I have one of the same type (I guess they are the same from 30 pict 1 to 34 pict. PM me with your postage details.

Were the bushes a tight fit into the housing? Did you use any blue hylomar between the bush and the housing, its just an idea that the fuel leak might be around the bush.

Hi Ian, I think that was the problem, the bushes were quite loose in the carb body they just slid in with very little resistance.
I decided to bite the bullet and I've bought a new carb from heritage so hopefully I will get it all sorted this weekend but then you never know

Could it be icing?
Hi I don't think it was icing I've had that with the Beetle due to he pre-heat pipes being blocked. I think the carb has just worn out.

I fitted the new carb(kafer carb 34 pict3), roughly set bypass & volume screws before hand approx. 2 1/2 turns out just to get going but struggled to get the thing to start, after lots of churning it just about caught but ran really rough almost as though it was missing and it wouldn't idle.
So took the new carb off off and there is petrol coming through when I pump it, thought i might have done something to the ignition, knocked a wire off etc. but that seemed ok , so thought I would try the old carb and it started straight away  I know I must be missing something but not sure what, also there is some side to side movement in the spindle is this right ?
Once again any advice is greatfully received :?

More repro rubbish by the look of it.

I would have an original German carb professionally reconditioned. That's all I ever fit.

Or bite the bullet & get a pair of decent carbs, 34FRD Dells if you can find some or 36IDF for bomb proof motoring.

Cheers Pete, you know how to cheer someone up ;) problem is I'm about £600 short for the IDF's .

How bad were the other repro carbs if this one is advertised as being "Manufactured with all new tooling, these are the best carbs of their type available. While they are a little more expensive than Brazilian carbs, this is outweighed by their exceptional quality." Which makes me think it could be me

You can use your kafer carb but get them flowbench tested and rejetted cause out of the box they are really ****.
I got some adresses of people with a flowbench but they are in Holland :?
Pete is right the best way is to rebuild a German made one.
