In need of some help good people.

On the way to Big Bang my 68 overheated
the oil filler cap blew off and spewed oil everywhere ,blue smoke billowing and she was massively down on power.was running beautifully until midway down the M1.

when trying to fathom out what to do at the services I'd limped to I noticed that there sounded like a rattle/knocking coming from cylinder 3/4 side at half throttle and up.
Topped up oil after letting it cool down for an hour and still a rattle/knock.

Dropped the oil today and checked the valves and this is where I need the help.

There doesn't appear to be any metal in the oil,and there's no end float on the crank.so I don't think it's big end bearings gone.

Popped the rockers off and noticed that one valve appeared to be open on cylinder 3,all the rest seemed level with each other.
And one valve seemed open on i think cylinder 1. See pics.
Are they supposed to be like this or is one/both of them stuck/ bent.

Im a complete novice when it comes to engine internals

Engine out unfortunately,
Remove spark plugs and cylinder heads
Inspect inlet and exhaust valves in heads and pistons in the barrels
If you are lucky you might have only bent a valve or melted a piston which can be replaced without splitting the case

Check out my thread and have a read of how to replace melted/smashed pistons

Bottom of thread after my alternator blew up

*Do you know the reason you overheated?
What speed were you doing?

Thanks for that bud.
I've been following your thread, love your van.

With regards to why it overheated I genuinely don't know.
It's ran fine right up until about 10 mins before it blew the oil out the cap.
The only thing I can put it down to is my fan belt was a little loose and the vac unit on the dizzy didn't work too well.intermittently working.
But what's weird is it did about 1200 miles on a holiday to Cornwall and has done Santa pod twice with the same faulty dizzy.

Cheers buddy - fingers crossed its a straightforward fix
They arent complicated to put right - take loads of pics once the engine is out and getting stripped
Something has got tight and hot im sure!
