Any one got any advice or experiences they would like to share. As I got a brammer of a bus but unfortunately the engine cooked itself up on the m25 on the way home from buying it :cry:So im looking for a NEW engine.Who is good/best, quality/service or dare I say it doesn't cost the earth !

Lot's to think about hear dude?

What you after performance and size wise?

You could pay anything from £400 for a decent second hand one upwards.

Importing from the USA is a cheaper option with serrano, find them via the samba plus others

Serranos are good, or it depends what you want. You could get a 1776 built on an old crankcase for about £2000 fitted at most engine builders or just buy a remtec one and have that fitted.

I've heard alot of different opinions about Remtec's, some people wont touch them, and really put me off the idea. I had a mechanic pulling at my pully (ooh er missus  ) and telling me the i had a fair bit of play so might be looking a replacement soon as well.

Anyone got positive/negative experiences of remetec they would care to share. I need somone to make my mind up for me

See its a difficult one. Basically if you have the cash get an engine builders to make you up one from scratch. I have a remtec one in mine and its run like a dream from when being installed about 4 years ago. So from this basis I think they are great.

but..................

I have mates however who have had loads of **** with there remtec from new, one mate has had a 1600 just fitted and it already needs a new cam as its rubbish and only pushes out something like 26BHP  after a tune.

Next time I am gonna go for handbuilt one buy either myself  or with an engine builder i know. They do cost more but at least you know whats in them and that they have not been botched together. Like some recon ones. :D

My tip is go for the hand assembled local. Decide what size you want and bite the bullet. Every corner you cut will come back to haunt you one day.
You might still end up with a dud but if you have done all in your power to avoid it, the odds will be on your side. If it is a local you have some sort of after sales chance as well.
I probably broke the cliche record in there, but it is what I have done and my bus is reliable, which is priority number one.
And a reliable bus is so satisfying and fun to own the price becomes irrelevant during the first tank of petrol.

All good advice buds and taken on board. And i've taken the plunge with a brand new VW mex unit from heritage !! YER HAY !!!!!!!!!!!!

A good choice! i have heard all good things about them so far. Let us know how it goes. It was a 1600 yea? 8)

i fitted a REMTEC 1641 from Heritage 2 years ago and have had no problems what so ever. Its done about 6000 miles mainly motorway up and down to Scotland plus a few trips down to cornwall.

It arrived today........YIPEEE...........and very nice to.Started painting it already ready for the big install at the weekend. Will keep you posted

A new factory unit is more or less the same price as a brand new factory unit. There is no exchange, so it saves grief. You might also be able to sell your old engine for parts.

I would either build one up myself or get a good engine builder to do one.

Getting the heads ported is the best way to make it work properly, add an Engle 100 cam & a pair of twin carbs & you have the basis of a great unit. The rest is down to cash.

See http://www.vwracing.net Speak to Alan for some advice. Mention me.

got mine from rich @ morenas

i know some folk wont touch them but there is always the (strike me down) watercooled route. alfa scooby or porsche air. there are some very inteligent blokes about . nothing makes your rear end lower than cramin 280 brake through it. i might end up getting my van on the road with a 1600 tp but it aint gona end up that way
