exchange engine numbers

Hi all
My dormobile has an engine number beginning AD, then 3 digits, then ending in VEC.
I know thw AD bit means a 1600 from 70-73, and I presume the VEC means it is rebuilt... but by who? Does anyone know who stamps VEC on their motors? Just wondering if it was a VW exchange motor or not

Real factory exchange engines retained their normal engine numbering system and had an X added at the end of the number.
