I've just been sorting my 1776 and installed flaps and thermostat.......
As has been said, and as you can see in the pic, when running J-tubes, there is a risk the heat from the exhaust will prematurely effect the thermostat. The problem is worse on my engine as the A1 sidewinder I run has different dimensions to a stock exhaust so the j-tubes sit even closer to the stat! I had to trim the lower tin to get the exhaust to fit and then had to trim the stat bracket to stop it touching the j-tube! I am hoping to get around the problem by using exhaust wrap and fabbing up some industrial tins. I'll be switching to a vintage speed and heat exchangers for the winter.
PS....splash the cash for the genuine concertina type of stat and not the modern springy version. The old one will fail in the open flap position whereas the new ones fail in the close flap position and cook your engine! Genius is everywhere
