hey all,

For some reason when I had my gearbox out last time I waited until I had re-installed it before filling it with the gearbox oil.

I am sure I was advised to wait until refitted but I cant remember and have no idea why you would wait.....

Surely its easier to fill up whilst on the bench or am I missing something obvious lol ???

cheers

One reason might be that you have something more to turn against when undoing the fill/drain plugs that have probably been untouched in over 40 years?

P.S. Always undo the fill one first! No point in draining it if you can't refill it ;)

ok BUT
what about gearbox out, both plugs free to move no probs.... why wait till its back in the van before filling it ???

Im sure im missing something

When its empty it's lighter and therefore easier to fit?
Could be that the fill angle allows any excess/overfill to drain out if required?

I sort of came to that conclusion partly but being honest the box isn't heavy and the extra oil inside isn't gonna make that much difference I would have thought....

as for filling angle... my vans jacked up on axle stands at the rear so slopes downwards quite heavily, and I presume most vans would be like this for gearbox work unless on a lift... surely the fill level would be IF the box was on level ground - this is easier to achieve with the box out than it is tipped frontways in the van ???? you can also use its recommended literage amount....

I will probably fill mines out of the van and when re-installing it go - rrrr that's why you fill it when its in the van
