So last Friday me and the other half were all packed to go on our summer holiday, first to dubs at the castle then a week and a half driving through wales up to snowdon. Set off a bit late and got 15 minutes down the a1 was going down hill so backed off the gas and then a loud bang  I thort that was the new engine blown up! Van cut out, no power so pulled over and had a look. I was happy to see that the engine had not blown and everything all seemed fine. Tried to turn it over and nothing. Gave it 5 minutes tried again and it fired back into life. Carried on and 10 minutes later it cut out again just before south mims. Same again nothing looked out of place gave it 5 minutes and it fired up again. Decided to pull in at the service and have a look around. Couldnt see anything so decided to turn back and head home. Got about 10 minutes from home and it died again.
Finally got it home so decided to take off the electronic ignition and replace with the old points and condenser, at the same time replace the dissy clamp as this was faulty and would not tighten up anymore. I couldnt get it going again as think i screwed up the timing when i took the dissy off so decided to through in the towel and make new plans for the holiday. Turned out well in the end as jumped in the golf and booked a cottage in betws-y-coed and had an awesome week, we did lots of walking finished off with snowdon on Friday. It was totally amazing if anyone is thinking of doing it it is a must. Will start a new thread when i get the pictures.

Anyway tomorrow i am going to try and get the van up and running, any idea's on what the problem is? ignition or possibly fuel problems? Not really sure where to start might try putting the petronix back on and go from there. Mite try sending it back and getting a new one? I spoke to the engine builder and he seemed to think it was the ignition at fault.

Just to give you some background i had my engine rebuilt and only has 500 miles on the clock all new petronix ignition 2, twin carbs, cooler etc it was running fine before i went away and the only thing i did different was driving at 50 - 55 constantly for 20 minutes or so?

Any help would be great.

The loud bang was interesting, if it were fuel i'd expect it to just die or chug a bit first. I have had it where the spring has come off the weights in the distributor causing incorrect advancing, then again why wouldn't it start again until rested? Think you have to go through setting up the ignition correctly, take it for a run and see if it does it again, and then be prepared to do some checks when it won't start, like seeing if fuel is present and then have you got a spark etc.

So yesterday I connected up all the petronix kit again, started it up and it ran fine for about 3 minutes then just died again. Just check for spark and had this at all 4 leads. Check for fuel and was plenty in the filter. Any more idea's?

Going to try and get hold of a timing gun and check the timing this weekend,
