I am going to stick a pair of ICT's on my 71 this weekend. It currently still has the 'stand' for the air filter in place.
Does this need to be removed to accommodate the 34's?
If so, is it best to just lop it off, or is it just attached with some spot welds that can be drilled out?
Any other advice?

I carefully chiseled the spot welds so that if the next owner wants to go back to stock it can be tack welded back in and the stock filter re-fitted. The welds were quite tough to chisel though and I could not have done it with the engine in place.

Hmm, I didn't want to drop the engine this weekend.
I might cut it quite low and then drill out the spots when I replace the engine later this year.

Get the angle grinder out and cut it out the way

It's easier to fit the ICT's with engine out anyway, as you'll need to remove the generator/alternator to get the intake manifold off and it's a right pita to do the manifolds up with the engine in place. Especially if the copper gasket is stuck in the head.
Oh, and change your sparkplugs while you get the chance. ;)

i fitted me ict's with engine in,followed all idiots guide from eurocarb(purchased from them)for bolting carbs to manifold, used a hacksaw to take off filter stand(nice neat cut and kept in loft for future).
removed old carb and manifold, bit of a ******,had to loosen carb stand etc to get clearance then fiitted carbs as per instructions.
hard to tighten r/hand manifold down so might be worth grinding abit off the flange to aid fitting.use 11m od nuts to be able to use smaller wrench on.
admit it would be easier to do with engine out but i found putting engine back in with twins on very fiddly without scratching paintwork, deffo a two man job, where as i useto pull me engine on me own when had single carb same as everybody else i spect.
good luck, make sure you have correct jets for your lump before you start.
regards.

sharky.

I fitted mine with engine in tho in hindsight wud have been quicker to take the old girl out. As for the filter bracket I cut it with a hacksaw near the bottom and bent it back to clear the carb.

For aesthetics I prefer it when the whole stand is removed and not just cut off. But then again, the amount of effort and inconvenience involved compared to a neat trick with a hacksaw I don't begrudge anyone who chooses that way. Heck, when I eventually upgrade to twin carbs myself we'll see if I can be bothered :p

I'm hoping to put in a new scratch built engine between now and the Summer, so will do the proper 'spot weld drill shizzle' then.....but for the time being I'll cut the fecker to get my twins in!

My choice was easy....PO had already hacked off half the stand and that explained why my air filter would never stay still :D

Did my bothers conversion the other weekend and just got a hacksaw in the engine bay to take it out......feels wrong cutting up the bus but has to be done for those twin carbs :(

Same as ^^ if you part cut through the strengthening ribs it'll bend up out the way a treat.
If needed again bend back and weld bung some weld on it..
