Fuel guage weirdness

Hi, my fuel guage seems to only show the correct level when started, once I am in motion it seems to have a mind of its own. Sometimes it's showing completely empty and sometimes half, then quarter etc. This doesn't seem related to going round roundabouts or up hill or anything else that alters the level.

Could this be an electrical issue or a component failure? Any suggestions?

Hmm depends could be electrical but sounds more like a sticking sender unit, 1st pick is a 68-73 model , second one 73-79. Both work on a float principle I replaced mine on my 71 bus after intermittent reading, unfortunately it's a pain in the arse as you have to remove the fuel tank unless you have a access panel

Ah ok thanks, In that case I'll put up with only knowing when I start it. I've only done a few journeys, I'll have to wait until I fill up again to get my mpg, at least I can then estimate how many miles I get to the tank.

try looking at the earth point for the fuel gauge and make sure its good.

The dash earth stuff runs of a couple of brown wires to a point from the back of the dash unit to a point somewhere just above the totem pole. Pull it on and off a few times to make sure you got a decent connection.

I've just been messing with it and when I turn the ignition on the needle starts to move then drops back then starts again a few times, then it climbs sometimes to where it should be. At one point it seemed to have stopped, then I slammed the glove box and it started to climb and settle at where I thought it should be. So I tried again and tapping the dash seems to influence it. So probably earth?

Sounds like it, I’ve been messing with mine recently and when I lost the earth, mine was reading full, but lecker trickxs ain’t my cuppa tea to be sure. It ^^^ that’s where it is .

Update: it doesn't works at all now! Fill up every 200 miles
