Laying under the van as you do looking up pondering what's what I noticed that there's a distinct smell of petrol. Noticed it first at the front and it's stronger at the back.

The van is in a lock up so there's no breeze to take odours away and you can't smell anything standing next to the van, all the hoses are new so shouldn't be persihed.

I guess the fuel tank must be vented somehow, is it normal to be able to smell petrol when under the van?

no :!:

check all your fuel lines asap and replace if unsure 8)

US (maybe euro too) busses 70 > were fitted with fuel evaporator traps in the air vents, then routed to the air filter to burn rather than escape. If you fall into this cat is the tank venting properly or into the environment
