Hi All
After a sad engine failure (full diagnosis to follow, but in short crankshaft oil seal failure and lots of end float) a couple of months ago, I have finally got round to removing the engine. After pulling the engine out yesterday, I started cleaning up the bell housing on the gearbox and noticed that there is vertical and lateral play in the gearbox output shaft. Is this normal and acceptable? Float present is not excessive but having rebuilt several old BMWs I have never seen lateral/vertical play before........

Any thoughts or experience would be warmly appreciated.

Thanks

James

you mean INPUT shaft, the one the clutch fits? could be loose where it screws together in the muff coupler (you have to take bell housing of to see)but remember its suported by bearing in flywheel.

Thanks 69 panel - I do mean input shaft, you are correct the one the clutch fits over thanks.

How much play do have you experienced??
