Very clean engine bay - do you actually drive it :?:

All looks well smart dude 8)

Very nicely done, love retro engine upgrades, looked at fitting a judson to my old bus (not the most reliable things) but went off the idea when I found that it would mean cutting the body to get it in, and to get a good super charger would cost a small fortune  .

Very nice DH, i like the carb set up and the oiler. Do they have a purpose those oilers, look cool, but what advantages is it running one? Think i have seen them over on the samba.......

Cheers!

Aogrady, check this:
http://www.ampcolubes.com/index.php

Dry fuels can harm your engine!

If you use unleaded gas, ethanol, propane, CNG, or Low Sulfur Diesel, your engine needs the original Ampco top cylinder lubricator!
The Ampco top cylinder lubricator provides critical valve to seat lubrication, which is now absent from gasoline, and prevents sticking valves and detonation caused by carbon and combustion deposits.

Compressed gas fuels contain NO LUBRICATING PROPERTIES! They burn clean and may be “environmentally friendly”, but burn hot, are corrosive, and can cause very premature valve failure. The only way to introduce lubricity to a compressed gas fuel system is with the Ampco top cylinder lubricator. Sulfur functioned as a valve seat lubricant in diesel fuel. Low and ultra-low sulfur fuels can cause valve recession problems in older diesel engines.

Hi Alistair,

I build the engine with NOS German type3 heads and these are not suitable for leadfree gasoline.
The Ampco oiler lubricates the valve rings and the upper piston ring, the oil for it is http://www.marvelmysteryoil.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
You can simply add this oil to the gasoline as well but that would be a lot of calculating, once the system is set up you can do about 6000 km before filling up the bottle.
These oilers became popular in the US at the time the lead got out of the gasoline.

Hi!

OK, i understand, the replace the damage caused by the lack of lead in modern fuels? Though IIRC, in the US all VW's sold there were lead free from about 67 - so in theory the AE bug engine in my bus will be fine to run on unleaded without bother?

Can't remember what the issue with unleaded was in the UK, I know there were/are lots of additives for certain vehicles without the hardened seats and valves that you need with unleaded. Though i thought all VW's would have been able to run unleaded from 67 onwards like the US...??

Though i suppose every little helps. Looks nice and retro though!

Cheers!

Alistair

As above, all VW engines after '67 were able to run on unleaded.

However, if fitting unknown age NOS heads, it is hard to say if they will be OK or not.

Either way, it's an awesome looking engine. Shame it has the modern scat fanshroud, but all the rest is just 8)
