Hi,

I have found a source in the USA for these truck mirrors. I have got a set already, but haven't got around to fitting them. (As usual)

There is a thread on the samba with some pics

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=276676&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=truck+mirrors&start=20" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here is a picture:

This is a similar unit to a gen option VW USA mirror

I forgot to take a actual picture of mine, so this is a stock photo to give you a idea. The mirror head is 5x10 inches, so a good size, and look the same as seen on many buses on the forum.

The price at the moment give or take a little due to the currency should be about £75, and i have included postage in that too.

These are going from most sources for at least £100 a set plus post

Add your names to the list if you are interested, i will be ordering in the week or so.

Cheers,

Alistair

I bought mine last week as I'm very impatient. They arrived yesterday and I'm made up with them, they seem to be good quality but as gadget said keep a good splash of wd40 on them for protection.

I'll be fitting them soon so will post some pics then

Mark(wishing he had waited and saved £50)

Hi,

Opps! £50 more? :msn4: Yeah, they do seem good, I am happy with the look of the set i got in for a trial run if you like - i reckon most are from the same suppliers wherever - good point about the wd40, wonder if Anchor Wax will work well?

Anyway, look forward to the pictures, dunno when i will get around to fitting mine, i am still trying to do the interior but the weather is holding me back!

Cheers,

Alistair

I'd like a pair can US get in on that deal since you found them stateside?

...look very much like the ones i imported a few sets of a couple of years ago...£60/£65 posted...them were the days.....someone with a svannah beige EB has a set fitted....can take close up pictures of actually item if anyone interested as i have a set....

Is the view angle good on the mirror lenses? My mirrors look good, but they dont really show much when you look in them as your driving. Terrible blind spot on my offside especially! Being a LHD that would be the RH mirror. Usually the offside mirror is more convex to give a wider view angle. I like to see the lane next to me clearly in the mirror, mine currently dont show enough for my liking!

I could be interested in this!

Hi,

I would have thought the view is very good indeed! The OG mirrors are really small for the vehicle i would have said, and the offside isn't convex - i get the GF to do my spotting for cars should i need to overtake

The bolt holes on each fixing bracket are 2.25 inches apart, and the bracket arms are 18.5 inches apart. The mirror head measures 5 inches wide by 10 inches tall and is stainless steel. The brackets extend the mirror 12 inches away from the vehicle. Adjustable clamps allow you to position your mirror for wide loads, and the mirror folds inward for driving through tight spaces.

All bolts and fixings are included in the box

The better vision is the main reason for me to get these - and of course they look rather cool........ 8)

Hope this helps!

Cheers!

Alistair

Would the larger mirror fit onto the existing mirror bracket do you think?, plus obviously it will need to be drilled and fitted on the top also.... but my concern would be the existing mirror bracket becoming redundant on the door, and then looking a mess!

Sorry for all the probably obvious questions, i just dont want to enter into this, then find they wont fit perfectly.
I either need to change the mirror lenses i currently have...or change the whole style of the mirror completely, so as to gain more vision.
These do look amazing!!

Hi,

The original mirror and stem will completely unscrew from the door, just leaving the threaded hole AFAIK, i intend to get a suitable bung, and paint it, or a small reflector might be nice, not decided as yet.

Shame i haven't got them fitted yet otherwise i would show a photo. They do have a lot of adjustment, so aside from drilling a few holes for the fixings, they will be fine. In the other thread i mention, there is a pic or link to a bus with them on. One of the Cornish guys has a set (sorry dude, name escapes me) and i think Evil Bens are similar or even the same maybe.

Cheers,

Alistair

Thanks for the reply Alistair.......

see this is what i'm afraid of to be honest, i dont want pointless bungs or reflectors etc. dotted around the bus if i can help it.
Especially as i'm intending on showing my bus at shows this coming show season, and attention to detail is what counts most imo.
I may just have to stick with the original mirrors for now, until i can find a suitable alternative, or until i can find out if the bracket of the truck mirror will seat where the original bracket does, thus covering any unnecessary holes.

Are you sure they are stainless steel mate?..... If they are then Im interested. Some ads for these mirrors say stainless steel but they aren't...... try a magnet on yours.... it dont stick to stainless steel

I just tried a magnet on mine
And it does stick

I quit like the rat look so not too concerned
Although I will be using liberal coats of wd40 over the winter

Hi,

I am not a expert on metals, but as a service engineer for domestic appliances, i have just tried tried a large magnet on my washing machine drum - sticks to that!

And washing machine drums are deffo stainless steel, additionally, it says stainless steel on the content description, whether this means just the head and not the bracket i dont know, but i can't vouch for this magnet and stainless steel thing.

I recall a carpenter friend using stainless steel screws on a job in a room with very powerful electro magnets, as they wouldn't be pulled out by force - so i would say that there are different types of stainless steel, with probably differing iron content or something.

EDIT:

Found a Wiki link, all sorts of stainless, some magnetic, some not, some with varying degrees of rustproof-ness

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stainless_steel" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So know you know!

Cheers!

Alistair - every day a school day!
