headlight upgrade

I have a 72 crossover the headlight surrounds have the 3 screws could I use these

I am pretty sure I also have read / seen H4 Golf headlights used as an upgrade, but wait for someone with more knowledge to confirm.

I used H4 Golf lights on my 71 bay. People had said you need to fettle them but mine just went in with a bit of a shove - the frame is close to the bowl. Mines the one with 3 tabs inside the bowl to hold the headlight in.

Fitting headlight relays will make a massive difference to the brightness of your stock headlights.
My bay only had 9.5v at the bulb connection on the back of the bulb. With the relays it was over 12v with the engine running which made them much brighter.

I just fitted one of these when I rewired my van ... made a massive difference, comes with instructions and it's a doddle

Matty, does that include the relay to work with the switch to change from main to high beam?

No ... The original relay (Dimmer Relay) stays in place for the functionality of the changeover between Main & High Beam.
The new loom removes the voltage drop created through the old relay by using an additional fused 12v supply.
If you look on my build thread, you'll see how bright they are ... plus I was replacing corroded wiring too

Thats pretty much the same system i used but i made my own using parts bought from here for 1/2 the price.

Also have one of these installed, considering I am a total wiring biff I got it fitted no issues - made a huge difference

I'm not sure if I'm missing the point here.. But I only installed 1 relay. Which means the supply to the original relay is now fed by a single relay controlled by the dash switch.

The problem with the original set up was that all the current for the lights passes through the switch, which tends to have a high resistance. The original relay shouldn't have a high resistance and therefore can still be used as the change over?

The single additional relay on mine appears to work OK anyway, and its probably a neater solution.

Edit - just for everyone's reference, I get about 13v at the headlamps when I last checked with this set up and the engine running. I haven't run a separate feed from the battery or anything, just a new loop from the main fusebox feed wire to the new relay..
