Hello and any advice?

Hi All,
Very new here, am looking for some advice and hope i have posted in right forum!
I own a 1972 VW Bay Window Camper which is in extraordinarily good original condition, having only had three owners since new. Also comes with the original curtains and service log book (completed to 1981).
The problem is with the original 1972 engine. I have been told that it is probably losing pressure and needs a new carburetor as it struggles to start and sounds distinctly unlike a camper at present.

Unfortunately due to financial pressures i do need to sell, therefore i have the following questions if anyone here may be able to help me.

1. Is it more cost effective to sell with the defective original engine?
2. Do i repair the original engine and sell?
or
3. Replace the engine and sell?

If 2 or 3 are looking to be the way to go, is anyone able to recommend a reliable, value for money garage, near Cirencester Gloucestershire?

Hello mate and welcome. 8)

My advice would be to fix up the engine and then sell, you will not get back what you put into a new engine.

If you want a garage nearish to you, then go for the one that me and my club use. Give Jason a call on 01454412777 (located in Thornbury) and he will help you out with whatever you need. Dont forget to give him my name (Ez) and he will help you. They are engine specialists aswell, so will be able to do whatever you need.

1st off T1 or T4 engine

the sale with the defective engine wont detract massively from the sale price and probably be your cheaper option.....

bang a few pics up and we can see whats going on in there and wet peoples appetite

Certainly if you decide to go for a rebuild, I would advise you keep the original engine rather than replace it, as I know that a fellow 'purist' like myself would most likely, given the orginality and good condition of your bus, find having the original engine a 'plus point'.

Araon.... well now you have prompted me with your question on t1 or t4 engine! How would i tell which is which? i see no identifying marks on the engine. I will trawl through the documents and see what i can find out.
Danbury Doug, yes it is a Danbury! I am glad you suggested to keep the present engine, i'd hoped for that to be the case.
Am having trouble uploading pictures but as soon as i work out what i'm doing wrong i will get some up asap. And no doubt will follow up with more questions !!!

Re the different types of engine, looking at the picture on JK, the exhaust suggests it's a Type 1 engine, which is in the first picture below.
The Type 4 engine is shown in the bottom pic.

Looks like it may well be a T1 then. Has been suggested today that there is a possibility it isn't the original engine, due to the added metal strip below the engine number? Have added a pic of the offending article should anyone be able to enlighten me! Will get pictures of interior taken tomorrow and posted.

Take a look behind the NS seat on the bulkhead theres a couple of riveted plates one will be the M plate which holds coded information on all aspects of your van from order...

in there is an engine spec too....

if you search I think its the FAQs page theres a link to an automatic decoder bung the details into it and it will give you details on interior colour options engine etc....print it off and stick it in the van as an added point of interest if anything is valid still......

Seeing as it has an air filter stand in there I'm pretty sure these only came with 1600s, as a 72 an AD code engine would be correct but I think the plate means its a recon of some kind so most likely not the original.
Has it been repainted at some point? that waistline change from sierra yellow(?) to pastel white looks a little wobbly.
