My first post. I am looking at an early bay to buy, looks good body wise etc

I haven't seen it yet but the chap is being honest and has told me of an oil leak from the engine.

I haven't owned a VW with a 1600 engine but from my knowledge of 911 engines it sounds like it's coming from the oil return tube (s). He thinks that somebody either jacked it up using the engine or the engine hit something. Tiny hole which leaks a bit when running.

Question is: does that sound right and if so can it be fixed in situ or is it an engine out strip down?

To be honest the engines a minor consideration, I would make sure the rest of it is worth your time and investment.

Youd need to evaluate the puncture your self but I would say as long as thats all the damage I'd strip it and plug it properly, it also gives you the chance then to evaluate the motor in more depth.

I would agree with Araon the body is the most important thing to check,go right over it and don't be shy,lift rubber mats up and carpets too.Get a good torch and have a good look underneath too.Check the engine for end float whilst you're there,grab hold of the crank pulley firmly and forceably try and pull the pulley out of the engine,then forceably push it back in,anything more than the slightest movement will need a rebuild later on.

Engine wise,it sounds like the push rod tubes are leaking which you can fix in situ if you use new adjustable push rod tubes (I've never used them,some people say they aren't that good) Or take the engine out,remove heads and replace with normal pushrod tubes,and check everything else whilst you're there.

I agree the body work is one of most expensive bits and most time consuming to fix. Again don't be shy give it a good going over.

Front panel bottom, around front window, lift edge of all window rubbers anywhere where water may have been trapped.

I looked at a few before buying mine, one had been filled nicely and looked great only sign was a tiny bit of sealant loose. When i pulled the sealant a chunk of filler fell out i felt bad but at least i didn't buy the shed!

You can buy/change the entire engine for less than £400 (worst case).
 
Thanks gentlemen. I didn't buy it, too rusty underneath, a sill and two jacking points and various other little holes, and who knows what else. So I will keep looking. I learnt alot yesterday so the two and half hour trip wasn't entirely wasted.

most of us have been there fella trawled the country looking at restored busses only to find that others ideas of restoration is most deffinately not yours.

rot free is a term that is somewhat overused and often is complete pigswill.

keep your eyes open on here quite often those going on here are from enthusiasts so the quality is to a better standard and you shouldnt get too many horrors.

Monkey spinner is selling a few on here recently

K & K have a very good reputation for honesty and help with good prices (though rising)
 
Thanks for that, keeping my eyes open. Saw a bus last week and the guy said there was no rust, I always ask, and he sounded genuine, wasn't far away so no real agro. Got there and was genuinely shocked. combination of filler and fiberglass. Fair enough, let the buyer beware

Beautiful custom bus on Volkszone, but in Exmouth, I'm in Kent so fat chance of seeing that one

theres a few kent bods on here should be able to give you some pointers may know of anything going closer to home....

I know SK bought a nice looking double slider to resell after some minor work unless he decides to keep it :lol:
