Have you tried a new relay mate?

Get the manual out and follow the wiring diagram with a meter until you find a problem - that's what I would do...

Stating the obvious....but on any US imported bus/van the main beam will only work when the headlights are switched on in the dipped position, due to the relay fitted. This can be overcome by fitting a slightly different relay with an extra live feed connected to the relay, only then will the main beam work independently.

hi
cheers for the responce think im going to buy a new relay and try that but would a dodgy relay make the fuel gauge needle move when trying to put the main beam on ? this is with the lights on has i didnt know that eather cheers
is the relay on the botom of the fuse box sorry but i am new to this has you cant tell :(

thanks

steve

If the relay is bu&&erd then it might be pulling a slightly high current which affects the fuel sender.

The relay will be under the column near the fuse board somewhere......found that manual yet :D ?

Foz is on the right track I think. I had the same problem on a 78 US bug a couple of years ago. I attach a VZI link that explains how i got it solved as the US vehicles use differnet fiunctions to uk. Hope it helps.

The relay is connected to underside of the fuse box, on the right hand side if I remember correctly. Its a 4 pin relay, but you will need to buy a UK version 5-pin relay, so obviously it wont then fit back into its original holder. There is a thread on here somewhere regarding this topic, with a how to step by step guide with pics. I found it very useful! If I wasn't on my phone via taptalk I would link it to you.....try a search for 'flasher relay' or suchlike, you will come across it.
