...do heat exchangers get?

I have put one heat exchanger on tonight but when the ribbed tube to the chassis is put over it there is approx 5mm gap all round - too big to close with a jubilee clip. For now I have put insluation tape round the heat exchanger so its diameter matches the tube, will this melt when the exch gets to full working temp? And in the longer term does anyone have any suggestions for how I can resaolve this?

On mine there is a fibre type "gasket" and split steel sleeve that fits inside the ribbed tube which is about 5mm thick all up. I have just had a quick look on VW Heritage's site and I think they might sell something similar (but possibly silicone rubber rather than fibre / steel sleeve)
