It would be good to see some photos of these old cars mentioned - when I was 17 I looked for a beetle, but ended up with a Morris Minor, which got crashed into a Volvo and was written off - next car was a convertible Triumph Herald, but that fell apart due to rust, then had an old Mk1 Escort and Mk2 Escort before getting bogged down with various bland company cars..

I feel kinda sorry for the kids now when I look back to the choice of first cars we had then (late 70's) - the variety of first cars was amazing, now it seems the kids just have Nissan Micra's and various nasty French hot hatches....

All right I'll come clean. :lol:

I bought my bay when I was 22, not long after I first started working for VW. It was nearly new and cost £1350. To put that in perspective, that was just under a years salary at the time.

To save you doing the maths, I just turned 63.

Over the intervening years I have had a bewildering variety of cars, both new, old, collectors and vintage ones. The bay is the only one I haven't sold yet.

I think I already knew you'd had your bus for an extremely long time. Still, it's a great story, and fair play for keeping it so long. 8)

This might sound pretty mental, but were you at Interpro about 10 years ago. I'm sure my mate brought a Civic into you guys to have it mapped, it had been built by prism in London and have a big turbo strapped to it. It was one of the first to be done in the UK, guy who owned it was called Mario?

BTW... Some right old fuckers in here Get your buses sold and let some youngesters enjoy hanging out the back of some broads in them haha

I got my 1st vw at 17, a 73 bug, then a year later a 71 bug, then at 20 I got my 67 bug then got my 1st bus my 68 at 23.

I could well have been there although i dont actually work there, just spend most of the time there tinkering on my bus and of course helping out on stuff for all of you lovely VQW peeps 8)

To follow up my earlier post (67yrs) I live in Nevada, USA . My 2. 1971 bays are totally rust free . Actually California cars are rust buckets to nevada people. We get under 6 inches of precipitation per year. My grandsons are eyeing my buses but will need to wait till I kick the bucket! Love this site though some of the "uniquely British terms" are challenging.

Nice. I am envious. I love that part of the world. The desert is magic. I was there again in march and April this year enjoying showing the other half my favourite part of the world.

Had a great time exploring and met some very nice people, particularly in Tenopah and Goldfield. I did however carefully avoid going to L.V. :lol:

Totally agree on Vegas. It is a real hole. Remember they dont build casinos by giving money away. I am in Fernley which is 30 miles east of Reno. Lived here all my life. The desert is really unbelievable. Glad you liked it. Come again and email me so i can tell you about some great places only some locals know about.
