these live 5 mins from my house and have been sadly rotting probably 10years, tempted to make an offer on the split no idea what to offer though

His probably waiting for the prices to go back up!

At least cover them up. My last bay ( late! ) sat on a guys drive way uncovered for 11 years!
It was like swiss cheese
Im all for a bit of controlled patina but thats just neglect.

"yeah mate, it's worth at least 25 grand. Jamie Oliver's got one too."

there was a dude using a eb RHD panel as a shed in his garden for years. I spotted it (this was all about 10 years ago) I knocked on his door offered him (he was old) a new shed bigger than the van, that I would erect (lol) swap all his stuff. Replace all the old knackered fencing with new (to remove the bus) tidy the garden and clear any mess as I was landscaping at the time and a good will £200 for him and his wife for any hassle.

he said come back and see him in a few days after he'd thought about it. Went back a week later and he said, He'd asked about and he wanted £5k for it. It was rusted to hell. I declined. Bet its unsaveable now and still there rotting :?

If they have good stuff sitting outside rotting it makes you wonder what goodies they have in the garages!

With all the vw thefts going on,its a wonder that split hasnt been lifted.

The split is worth saving but the Type Three has probably gone too far by now, I cant imaging that bugs too clever!

I remember a yard of cars years back where the was a split and a bay westy sat going green, the yard owner said they were going up in value and he wasnt selling, it seemed he was oblivious that the rise in value was negated by the deteriation

That said, we had a fair few driveway bargains before the internet ruined everything

the split looks savable tbh.

Looking at some of the barndoor restos, all splits are savable, you just need a door handle and a KFab account

There's always a few lurking, we have one tucked in the corner - too sentimental to scrap it, too far gone to save.
Mate has just started restoring a bus that's been sat at the bottom of his garden about 10 years. He only bought it for the westy interior and he'd been meaning to cut the rest up for scrap ever since. Now it's a viable resto project :?

Just knock on the owners door and ask "hi, would you be interested in selling the van"? Then see where it goes from there. Worst they can say is no!

In my case it would mean selling the early bay and I'm not sure I could do that

Just ask as I have a few bob that could do with spending before the tax man comes looking :p

I know the owner, he has owned that bus for years and years and year but the split will be for sale shortly, have a look on SSVC

Split van SOLD pending payment.

Thought I'd best post a reply as the owner
1) The 1968 beetle belongs to my son (who owns a very nippy '61 beetle as well) It used to belong to his grandfather and he can't bring himself to part with it, although it is just a shell basically. He did a lot of work on it a long time ago before some scroat set fire to it. His current plan is to somehow get it into his own backyard.

2) The squareback was bought by my son and myself with the idea of restoring it. After starting welding work it was found to have a well rotten floor that had been covered up by some incredibly artistic fibreglass work. (it even had jacking points fashioned in 'glass) We had already bought a number of parts (wings, exhaust, heat ex. front clip, under front screen panel etc) but decided it was too much work. We recently decided that we would have to break it and sell the parts off.

3) My split van. Matt is correct, I have owned her for about 17 years and up to approx. 3 years ago she was my only means of transport. She was taken off-road after failing MOT for corroded rear wheel arches! ( new mot tester; she had passed test in same condition for previous 3 years at same garage) All important (ie testable) welding work was done which included stuff that I could see would soon need attention:- inner and outer sills, rear wheelarches, cross chassis member, rear corner, etc. I then decided to do some extensive (upgrade) engine work (I now had a second car) and could take my time to do it. Trouble now is that at 68 I'm getting to old to be scrabbling round under her, especially with our climate, so have decided I must sell her. If anyone is interested, give me a ring 01582490818. and I'll tell you anything you want to know (including want wants doing) I'm looking for £8500 and can justify it. So if you want a genuine UK RHD splitty ? Dave C.
