How To Register Your New Imported Early Bay ................

Ok heres how to register a bus

1st) You need to get the bus up to mot standard .
So by swoping over the lights etc to Uk spec and making sure all the brakes etc are adjusted up . The chassis number on an early bay Pre 71 (71 onwards its on the raised lip on the LHS of the engine bay near the hatch seal) is located on the rhs of the engine bay near the base of the oil bath air cleaner this should be clean i.e no rust or old paint . I give this bit a good wire brushing to clean the shit off but if you have og paint then a good T cut helps . Also there should be an ID plate located behind the passenger frt seat On a LHD bus The drivers on a RHD bus . This is stamped alloy and benefits from a good bit of brasso on it too.

The mot certificate is then granted on your chassis number (Because you dont have a Reg number and the DVLA need to say that it is that specific vehicle )

2nd) You MUST have insurance .
Herts insurance only grant two weeks on a chassis number But i think Flux grant 4 weeks so if you fail at the mot u dont have to panic too much .

you get YOUR bus insured on your chassis number . MAKE sure you have written/read the number properly as if you havnt your insurance will be VOID .

AGAIN this is done on the chassis number as you Dont yet have a reg number

3rd ) You will need a D.O.M certificate from Volkswagen Uk . Phone customer services and they will email one to you which you print off ,fill in, and return and they charge you £35 for the privalige . This then gives you and the DVLA an idea of when the bus was manufactured and therefore what year plate to issue .

4th) Do you have all the relevant documentation for your van .
I.e Do you have the customs reciept to say you,ve paid all duties etc And/Or if you didnt bring the bus in yourself do you have a reciept from the previous owner/importer to say that you actually own the vehicle .

5th) The DVLA

Now you can send the details off to the dvla with all the above paper work (FOR GOD SAKE TAKE COPYS AS THE DVLA HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO LOSE STUFF) and you will get it back in a couple of weeks OR you can take it to your nearest DVLA office and push it over the counter .....DONT be scared the are Human and you,ll find are very helpfull too . You have to pay the DVLA £ 55 registration charge .

YOU WILL/MAY need your passport as proof of Id ,You present all your paper work ( P.S take a mag to read cus of the queue ) over the counter they check through it and they give you back a couple of forms to fill in and then they send them of (At there postage expense NOT yours  ) and within two to three days your documents come back with your new reg number and a tax disc too . You then have to get your plates made and Your done

Get In Happy Bus Days

NOTE ...........

If you have imported it from the USA and have the certificate of title ( US version of the V5) you wont need the DOM certificate to register it

If you do not have the certificate of title from the USA, you WILL have to have the DOM certificate from VW UK.
In this case you MIGHT be asked to have the vehicle inspected by the DVLA for them to check the Chassis number

Last bit courtesy of Slammed resto

Good to see someone putting up a basic guide, it really is quite a simple process and I don't know why so many people are put of by it. Nice one GB!

One thing to note though, the registration fee is now £55, and it's possible the DVLA will want to inspect the van. Our local DVLA requires inspections on all 'historic vehicles and camper vans'.

Good thread :)

I have a copy of the VAG UK proforma for dating certs if anyone wants one emailing it, or could host it?

The only other point is to note that whilst only buses coming from the outside of the EU need to pay duty, if you buy a US van from Europe that is unregistered, then you 'may' need to show proof of duty payment at that point, or they may accept the bill of sale as proof - the point is its another potential sticking point.

:)

Hi Clem , you will need proof of duty paid in EU on an outside EU import , and if youve imported stateside dont forget the vat 386 (personal import) form when you register with DVLA .
just gone through the process and got my 68 all reg'd , took paperwork in monday and got it back today , not bad turn around 2 days .
i had the texas title so did not need the DOM form from VW . went with a filled out V55/5 form (dvla) , MOT , vat 386 form , cover note , photo drivers licence and £55 , came back as an F plate first reg'd 29 th august 68

You also have to fill out a V55/5 form. I found this really misleading, but was actually quite simple after a phone call to DVLA.
Here's what they told me.

You only have to fill out sections
2, which was 'historic' for my van(1969)
3
4 they filled this
5
6
7
8, 2 axle rigid
9
10 they filled this one in for me
22
25, date the van was made. If like me, you have a US van, it only had the month and year,on the title, then just put the month and year in the box.
26, date of application
28
29
30
31
32
42
43, first 4 digits of your postcode
44
45
50, optional
and then sign.

Hope this helps!

just fill in what you know and they will sort the rest out 8) once heard how someone filled the form out for a stretch limo h2 hummer and put down snow plough and it came back on the log book  but when it got stopped its new owner then had to go for an inspection and re-register it correctly .
