I am about to service my brakes front and back and never done this before so need to buy the tools to inspect the brakes. I have a 1971 and just wondering if this a standard 36mm hub nut? I guess I will also need a breaker bar but is there anything else I will need just to take my wheels off to inspect the brakes? I assume some new split pins.

As you have 5x112 stud pattern (same as late bays) you don't need to remove the rear hubnut :)

The rear drum is just held on via a bolt or two, iirc. And the wheelnuts, of course. :)

the rear hub nut is 46mm on a bay not 36mm. i usually take all that stuff apart and paint mine with some really nice rust resistance paint and then put it all back together so i do take my hubs off. i do that on every vw i've owned over there years it makes it look nice.
