OK, bearings seizing on the old alternator was behind my breakdown in France. A new alternator has been fitted and the fan as well. Picked the bus up from the workshop this afternoon and all seemed well, started OK generator light went out as normal and arrived home safely.

Having left the bus standing for about 3/4 - 1 hour when I came to move it again it started OK but the generator light just won't go out, even with increased revving. Thoughts on what to check?

Don't know if its connected or just a coincidence but the indicators stopped working on the journey home as well - that is they didn't work at all when indicating pressed up or down. It wasn't a case of the green light in the dash dial just flickered quickly which usually means the earth is not good enough

Hi.
This happened to mine the other day causing mild panic, Gen light glowing, indicators not working and the fuel gauge not working when trying to signal. Turned out to be a loose fuse (No. 12 - mines a 71). Phew!
Hope this helps.

Have you checked the fan belt as these do stretch a little after fitting and it may need tightening.

My bus starts up a-ok, but the gen light seems to be on then fade slightly when the ignition is left on (before i start up), but a good ole rev seems to kick start things.
I did have a panic before but seems to be that a high rev will sure get rid of my light.

Thought it might hel.......maybe :?

We have some progress - generator light now seems to go out ok. But, indictaors are not consistent. Had them working this afternoon perfectly having checked earth at the back of the bus. Now we are back to having no green lights on the dash, but if the emergency flasher is pulled all four indicators come on but stay on and won't flash.

So the puzzle is, are we talking about another earth somewhere - maybe with the steering column or could the flasher unit be failing? Or is there something else to check?

Kids are supposed to be taking the bus away on holiday first thing Monday so any ideas that might help me solve this tomorrow most welcome :(

Thanks
David

Sounds like an earth somewhere, when the damage was fixed did they need to remove earths etc?, would be worth checking through them all and also checking no fuses have been disturbed in the fuse box etc

Yep, had a play with the fuse box, changed one fuse which hadn't blown but was out of shape. Emery clothed the ends of a few others and the connectors - and bingo they worked.

But having left the bus idle for a few hours when he went to drive away in it tonight thats when they wouldn't work.

we now have had it all =

Working then stopped working mid journey
All 4 flashing very fast
All 4 working normally
And none of them working and no green lights on the dial

Sounds like process of elimination in the day light tomorrow morning

Cheers Graham

Process of elimination seems to be working. Started at the back re-checked bulb fittings and earth - all OK
Check the indicator switch, bit of a clean up on connectors - again all seem OK
Finally lifted fuse strip out as opposed to just checking each fuse and to get to the relays ....

Guess what, droplet of water fell on my hand ..... quick shaking check of relays and guess what, seem to be full of water

Next question to self, will they dry out or where on earth can I get a couple of relays - especially on a Sunday morning :(

You may be lucky and they'll dry out in the sun. The early indicator and main beam relays will come apart and dry out, don't know if later relays will though...

Got lucky :) A combination of a good shake, gentle heat from hairdryer and left out in the fresh air and sunshine and everything is back to how it was.

Only problem to solve is how the water is getting in, but it points to a new windscreen seal fitted last week - although the fit looks really very good up against the glass :(

I had some black rubberized sealer added when the windscreen was refitted, totally watertight now (fingers crossed).
