Can anyone help im after Insurance for my son he,s 18 his first car a vw polo 1043cc passed his test today 8)

Does anyone no any :?:

5-6k seems to be the norm for kids these days!!!

young lad that works for us got several 5 figure quotes

some companies will ask that a tracker is fitted and he doesnt use the car between 11pm and 7am and the insurance reduces quite a lot.

Me... i bought my 16yr old lad a scooter and that cost £207 to insure, so im encouraging both my lads to take up bikes until they are atleast 21yr old!! gives me some breathing space before i get nailed for a new car!!

Blimey! that is steep  - though when I first passed and looked about for cars (early 90's) I found getting a triumph spitfire with classic car insurance was much more affordable then anything modern I could have driven - though they probably have closed that loophole now!

would it be cheaper to insure yourself and have him as a named driver?

most companies wont do classic insurance for young people  .

i rent out flats, and the other day natwest insurance rang me to say that the renewal would be going up.

£400 to £2000..... something about flood risk

insurance companies should be shot. but then i remeber some of my mates drove their cars like theyd stolen them when we were kids so can see where it comes from  .

can you insure the car and put your lad as a named driver? i know its not the right way to do it and he wont build up no claims bonus. but at least you'll be able to still tun the heating at home this winter without being driven into poverty just to pay £3k to insur a car.

im 25 and my insurance is still over 400 quid and that's with 7 years no claims (living proof that not all young drivers are guaranteed to crash in the first few years) the direct line named driver route saved me enough on insurance to get a lightning fast 1.4 Ibiza when i was 22. but its worth remembering the named driver NCB Is not transferable to any other company. so im still stuck with direct line for my 7 years with them but only 3 with anyone else.

Just been through this for my son,

18 yr old, full licence for a 14 months (been driving my company car for 12 months which doesn't count) with a 1lt polo.

Found admiral to be the best, he is the main driver with me and my wife on the policy as well.

The cost was £1950 for 12 months included on a multi car policy. I also swapped my car over to their multi car policy and saved another £140 on that.

I believe they also do a 10 month policy that gives you 12 months NCD, but that is not with multi car.

Girls seem to be half price as the risk is less apparently.

I decided to eat the costs for a year as I didn't want to go down the "fronting" route..

my daughter is 22years old and she bought a 1972 beetle last year it was£845 to insure her as a learner in it,she passed her test in january and now the insurance as gone up to over £1000 with the same insurance company,i asked them why and they said now she will be driving unsupervised,so have shopped around and got it for £698 with adrain flux, try compare the market that what we did first time good luck

might not be aplicable to you but the coop (cis) count a moped for NCB.so if hes had a ped for a year least its a years no claims

also the coop do as pay as you go type insurance where the car cant be used beetween 11pm and 6 am,as this is when they usually stuff em  you can still use the car in these hours but they charge you for doing so.

there are a few that do this now and it does bring the price down quite alot.

i sound like a cis rep

With direct line named drivers also gain no claims if its used with them, my Mrs got 4yrs NCB as a named driver.
Sadly have to disagree with this one. I apparently never gained my NCB when I was a named driver on my fathers policy. Things may have changed since then, but be damned sure before you pay them that this is the case!

Another little tip is to use the comparison websites, find the cheapest 2 or 3 quotes and go direct to those companies.
I did this a couple of years ago and found the direct price to be £30 or so less. It also allows you to play other insurance companies off each other a touch when they ask you what is the best price you have been quoted already.

if anything happens and you get busted for fronting, niether of you will ever get insurance again!! its classed just the same as fraud and is a criminal offence, not jst a motoring offence!!!
