Intermittent electrical problem.

can anyone help with this problem?My bus ('71 1600 TP 009 dizzy) will be driving along with no probs and then the voltage gauge will start jumping about.This occurs at the same time as the engine seems to be missing.Then just as soon as it started it goes away and returns to normal.I am trying to eliminate faults but not sure where to start.Would this seem the best way.
1.Check dynamo..brushes,output
2.Replace points,rota,cap,condensor,leads,plugs.
3.Replace regulator if unable to test (can these be tested)

First and easiest check is connections - is a wire jumping/vibrating loose?

Check and clean each connection at the points you mention above.
