We were tootling up the M1 today about 50mph (like you do), then just before coming off at J40 the van started to loose power and i could hear a light noise from the engine (hard to tell what sort of sound with the kids and general noise going on), a bit like pinking i reckon. Then i got the whiff of oil through the front vents.

I am burning a bit of oil at present.

We were pulling up the slip road, the noise stopped and we were off again.

Pulled over a mile down the road, oil is ok no other apparent problems were visible.

Had a similar problem when we bought the van, but a lack of oil and tinware (overheating) was the problem then.

Any thoughts please.

Was it running hot when you checked it? Could be overheating and pinking - best to check ignition timing, mixture, valve clearances, thermostat and flaps, and compression test to be safe.

I had a similar problem but mine has ended up in a poor way.
went to Blanford for a cider and real ale festival this weekend and on arrival at a mates house could hear a slight noise from the engine . after a night on the cider i decided to take a look. Tightened up the fan belt and ran it . at idle all seemed well give it a rev and ther was a distinct vibration. a 2.1/2 hr drive back to S. Wales will test it.
On route no major power loss but passengers were starting to go deaf. Well was going to buy new Carbs a Python exhaust new oil cooler 1.25 rockers so I thought might as well run it home ,if I make it great, if not theres always the Friendly AA man.
The biggest test was from Bath up the big hill in Batheaston towards the M4 , as Alexander says "Simples" flew up it well kind of!! from here on its all down hill to Newport. just one stop the Toll on the Severn Bridge ,that broke the back of our beloved Frank. suddenly someone had thrown a bag of spanners into a washingmachine and left it inplace of our engine.
So off we rattled still pulling away "Tidy like " as they say down this way
 loss of power on a slight hill change gear No hard sholder for 3 miles  change gear again 4 way flashers on crawling up the hill now in 2nd gear , i can see an opening in the red cones better pull over me thinks . Oh ! that was a big puff of smoke I think this is the end of our journey Guys. Bugger 20 mins from home.
RESULT OF TEST you can only drive about 2 hours if the bottom end is knackered . if the end float play is excessive it will blow.

ok now to decide what to put in it 1641 super street pro .porsche ,scooby.
If anyone has a spare motor .
just as well i didnt spend all that money on Carbs Exhausts etc
