Late vs early rear hatches

Can anyone tell me if late rear hatches fit our earlies?

I thought they were different, but just wanted to make sure

they are different, I cant see any reason why they wouldent fit, but the late arches are UGLY, so why would you want to fit them ?

They'll fit in the hole, but the hinges and locking mechanism changed from August 1971.

There's a reasonable-looking one on ebay atm, and the desciption says fits earlies, but I thought there was a difference. Thanks sparkywig
