Hi all

I have a new engine but an old problem :(.

I think I've got oil leaking from my rocker covers. There is certainly oil on the bottom edge of both rocker covers and I have oil on the heat exchangers and the engine support bar...and my drive.

I'm happy...(well prepared rather than happy!) to have a go at changing the seals. But this is all new territory for me. What is going to happen when I take the covers off? Am I going to get a flood of oil come out or just a few drips?

The springs on the covers seem quite tight so I'm not sure why they should be dripping while they are so new.

Any comments apprciated.

First, there should only be a little oil that comes out when you remove those. Second, are they the German valve "rocker" covers or an aftermarket pair? I've never had an aftermarket pair fit right. Last, are you using cork gaskets or rubber? Again, I've never had luck with any but the cork gaskets. German covers, bails (those spring things. :) ) and cork gaskets.

As above residual oil and its a simple 10 minutes on your back, just a few rags at hand to catch the oil and wipe up afterwards.....

just need to be carefull if the bail arms are tight that you dont lever them outwards otherwise you risk damageing the cast apertures they locate onto the head with  ....

Is it best to lever them from the centre or from the edges?

Thanks...

Alternativly you can also wrap a rag around the arm and pull on it in a downwards direction which works a treat and will not damage anything.

I put some of the rubber seals on my beach buggy and they stretched as they got hot.
So much oil dripped on to the exhaust pipes that when i looked in rear view mirror i thought the engine was on fire
I had to cut half an inch out of each just to get them back in :? Not much fun on M25.........

Cork and genuine parts are a must.

Also make sure the clips are the right way up, I forget which way is right, but I had this problem for ages until I flipped them the right way up!

How can I tell what way the clips should go?
