Well it has been a frustrating few months but I hope I might finally be getting there, as the above few post tell you I have had a 1955 engine built, I only ever intended to do a 1776 but after some pressure from the boys ( insert the name gadget here ) i went for the engine that blew my budget. Had a few teething problems but finally got there with the engine after having the dam thing out god knows how many times. But having blown my budget I could not do anything with the gearbox and the new engine really was too much for it. So after a very busy month at work and lots of overtime i treated myself to this
It came out of a running and driving bus and cost a pretty penny.
So after lots of reading on here it seemed like a fairly straight forward process, and Paul Aucott, God bus from on here, came over and we gave it a whirl
Will try to put as much info in here as possible so anybody in the future can have the benefit of my experience.
so Engine out (AGAIN)
Gearbox out
Bellhousing off the old box
And nose cone off the old box
At this point we measure up the input shafts from both boxes, this was the main area of debate on the other threads I had seen about this conversion, the input shaft on the 2 litre box was 1mm longer then the one on the 1600 box, so we decided to leave it.
we then put the nose cone from the 1600 box onto the 2 litre box. and when we went to swap the bell housing over I checked to see that the input shaft rotated, and it did not. Major panic time, hence no photos of this bit. anyway after a frantic few moments we decided to remove the 1600 nosecone and check it again, with the nose cone off it rotated freely. So we put the old 2 litre nosecone back on and it still rotated freely, I cannot work out why this was as when put together both nose cones look identical, but anyway, all we then did was swap the mount from the 1600 over to the 2 litre nose cone
we then fitted the bell housing from the 1600 onto the 2 litre box and offered it up to the engine to make sure it fitted together and the input shaft fitted
everything seemed to fit fine
so here is the box with everything swapped over
then it was box back in
then engine, we has the make the engine support bar mount holes slightly larger to get the support bar to fit but it was only a tiny amount
Then it was time to see if it made a difference, and boy did it, feels like a totally different engine, and drops he rev by about 1000 rpm similar to the beetle box conversion.
So there it is should be a simple conversion but took us hours as my bus fought us all the way as usual but the process should just be this
Swap nose cone mount only from 1600 to 2 litre, not whole nose cone
Swap Bell Housing over
enlarge engine support bar holes,
Put it all back in
Simples
We also changed a couple of the gear shift coupling and now the gear change is so much better I cant describe the improvement, but the after market coupling i bought was complete pants and we had to cobble something together using the old and new unit, we also had fun and games with my CV joints but we go there in the end. Thanks to Paul for all his efforts, and his good lady Amy for providing the food and drinks and lending me paul for all that time. I also put a new Fuel tank sender in whilst i was all out, but fuel gauge is still playing silly buggers.
