For the heat exchanger cables there are some plastic grommet type things that clip into the carrier tube at the engine end. These seem essential to the operation of the cables as they hold the sheathing in place in the tube and thus allow the cable itself to move, if that makes sense. These have to come out to get the new cable in. They are cut in half through one side so they will open up enough to go over the cable, they then have to push back into the tube in the right position. When i did mine the engine was out and they were a little tricky to get out, and then one was difficult to get back in. If the engine is in, it may be one hell of a job. I wasn't aware of these clips as i hadn't seen them in any catalogue. I know this may all sound odd but when you see them it will all make sense. Also, at the engine end the sheathing itslef had rusted to the tube. Pulling it from front end only stretched the sheathing into a long spiral. If yours have rusted try and release them but pushing them from the engine end by tapping them with a long thin flat bladed screwdriver and hammer. Once released it was all pretty straightforward, didn't have to remove the dash/either.
Didn't take that long but as i say the engine was out.
Good luck Al
