new ally steering wheel boss

Hi all,
I bought a new wooden steering wheel and polished ally boss recently, tried fitting this weekend but couldnt. The ally boss looks the right size but the splines didnt look they were machined properly?
Has anyone else had this problem before?
Should it be forced on?
Apparently ive got the correct boss for the year of my bus and that they have sold a thousand of these without any problems?

Anyone had a similar problem?
