Hi Folks,

Having wasted far too much time cocking about with old engines I have decided to bite the bullet and buy a 'new' engine for my bus. I just hate that feeling you get in the back of your mind when you are fully loaded up for a weekend away or annual holiday with family in tow and secretly worrying if ya gonna make it to the campsite etc.

Anyone else feel like this??

Anyway, I thinking of either one of those 'brand new' vw built 1600cc engines or if I can afford it then maybe a 1776 from somewhere.

If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great as I don't want to buy a poorly built piece of sh@t.

I had a 1641 built a few years ago and it leaked from day 1 and used to seize when it had a good run with the remedy being to pull and push on the bottom pulley and then it would free. Basically all confidence gone in that engine builder!!!

What ya got or heard good things about??

Give john a call at http://www.autoelectricsolutions.co.uk he is building nice engines for a good price. He has parts for a good 1776 at the mo.

I'm sure I heard someone say you built engines Pete??

Basically I want a totally leak free engine that starts on the turn of the key and runs nice in my bus without getting too hot etc

Anyone else running a great engine???

Hello I know nothing about engines, but i have to get a new one last year, so I wnet for a Remtec 1641 and I have not had one problem with it, or any oil from anywhere and i've done 10,000 miles sinces november :D all I know is they build them to OE spec which I think means to VW original Standards.

Good look picking one :D

I don't build engines for customers. I don't have the time & can't compete on price. Also all the anciliaries need to be in good order to make it run sweet.

A remtec is a good option on a budget.

Cheers for the help I'll be making some phone calls tomorrow.

Are you happy with your motor then??

The engine was built in around 2000, so its 7 years old now.
It was built for a mate of mine Chris by GAC with counterweighted crank, polished heads, 110 cam & fulll flow oil. It ran a 17.3 at the pod in his bug, but that's not really relevant. I had a 1641 in my old bug & we used to race each other on the street on every occasion. Driving flat out in top gear with the shift light blazing. It has taken a lot of of stick & has never grumbled at all. it revs free & cleanly too. We did loads of shows & it drove great. I am looking forward to using the bus with this engine, it's got 40's on it & merged header & turbo muffler.
I am goint to fit some bolt up rockers & electronic ignition to it soon & set it all up properly. I have driven it round the block a few times & it feels stong.

Cool motor Pete!!!

It should be nice in ya bus for sure.

I tried to call the other company you told me about today but no reply.

I will try some more tomorrow when I get back from getting a quote to fix the dent in the rear of my bus that a lorry made.

if your on a budget then the remtec 1641 previously stated is a very good buy. Had mine for two years now and hasdone a lot of motorway mileage bewteen london and sctland with no problems. happy sits at 70 for the journey.

I bought a new Vege engine and that has been very good too. Never missed a beat and never fails to start.

Not sure if they are a popular choice?, the only thing I would like is a bit more torque. Fully ladend on a steep hill is a bit of crawl in second.

I went down the brand new Mexican VW route, Weber progressive carb and Stainless header and quiet pack.
A bit of extra power, but like you it was more about feeling confident it would get me to where i was going.
