For the last couple of years I've been scraping by as a self-employed contractor in IT.

It's been a difficult couple of years for a number of reasons, so I made the decision to go and find something more permanent and stable.

I've been really lucky as my particular skills appear to be in demand and I have had some great recruiters working my corner.

I accepted an offer earlier this afternoon and may be starting as soon as Monday.

I reckon this chapter is going to be a good one! :D

Excellent news. :D What's the first plan for your van with your new-found wealth...?

Good question and a big well done. I've dabbled in self employment on a couple of occasions and although it has its own obvious benefits there's nothing like a regular reliable salary. These days I try to have a balance of both.

Good luck and all the best

Made the decision a while back that I need to get someone else involved to get some work done on my van. Left them a voicemail today and hope to get the van off my drive soon!

Firstly congrats on the new role.

What didn't you like about it? Did you struggle to get work? were the rates no good?
Contracting was a happy accident for me, but I'm not really built for it. In the sense that I don't bid for work or chase it - I've just been lucky to have work ticking over. There were definite periods (especially in the run up to Christmas) where the work ran dry. Also I had some problems with my health for a long while last year which left me very limited and as we all know; contractors don't get sick pay or holiday pay

I have just finished a 4 month, full-time contract and was open to doing the same again but contract work seems very thin on the ground at the moment, whilst permanent roles are in abundance. Well, in my speciality anyway.

I've scored a good salary in a role that should be very rewarding for a long time. Contract rates are great, but they're finite and need to cover the gaps.

Congratulations. I've been IT contracting for 3.5 years and I have been lucky enough to have had work throughout the entire period. It has been stressful every 3 months in getting extensions, so I understand entirely why you'd like the security of a permie job.

All the very best

Matt

Congrats dude. It's not a great time to be out of work. My last contract ended almost 8 weeks ago - but *fingers crossed* I'll also be starting a new role in a few weeks :)

Congratulations :D good news and enjoy your new role.

It seems a few of us are IT bods on the forum and I have 3 people in the department where I work that have vans, certainly a trip out blows away the cobwebs from staring at a screen all day!!

Sounds like real good news George :D This could be just the ticket to get your act together (with the bus) and maybe soon it`ll be back to rolling again to the shows  Might even get you a beer to celebrate,,, proper like ,,

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,, Next thing you know,,,,,,,, we`ll be feeding you burgers  ;)

Oh fair enough, I've been contracting for the last 8 years and apart from giving notice in november after 4 weeks or so into a contract I have not had a break. I did know that I wouldn't work in december but I was paid 15 days.

The shortest contract I have done is 12 months and I have been really, really lucky in that apart from the 1st contract role people have found me.

Plus I really like the rates and the fact I dont pay a great deal of tax... :)

Cheers for all the nice comments peeps :D Start at the new gig on Tuesday!

Excited :D

Longest piece of contract work I've had was 4 months
Contracting funded a very leisurely lifestyle for me for some time. I didn't mind the downtime where I could focus on other things.
Sadly, during my health problems last year, I was unable to travel as easily so actually had to turn work down. I had some small bits here and there but it did mean my earnings were very thin on the ground. Once that was all sorted I got a meatier contract and that's allowed me to save a little money back up as my savings had obviously taken a big hit.

The job I've landed now should be ideal for me and whilst I know I could earn more contracting if I had constant work, I'm looking forward to the benefits of being part of a company again!
