Ive finally got around to fixing the oil leaks on the push rod seals, On my 1971 Danebury fitted with a T4 2 litre engine. When I took the rocker cover off I noticed one of the bolts holding one of the rockers in place had snapped leaving a piece in the head, it is too short to get anything on it so it looks as if I'm going to have to take the head off, Can this be done without taking the engine out
why do you think this bolt had snapped ?

You may be able to get it off with the engine in situ but I would drop the engine out coz you will always find another job that needs doing!

I'd wager that it's snapped because some muppet has snapped it. Those use a stepped M10-M8 bolt, I saw one in the shed yesterday if you want it posted out to you.
If you've got room to, run a die down it, put two M8 nuts on there, tighten them together and wind the inner one out. If you haven't got room for that, try welding one nut to it (really ******* hot mind).

Thanks for the replies, I can't get a nut on it as it is too short but I've managed to drill it out. Should I tap a new thread in or use a helicoil?

Well now, that depends on how well you drilled it out ;-) what size drill bit did you use?

I used 4 drill bits going from small and getting bigger and bigger the hole is now slightly smaller than the stud

If you're very careful you might have some luck with a stud extractor, but like I say, very careful. They're a very hard, brittle steel so they can snap and then you'ms buggered. I think I'd try tapping it standard 10mm, if that doesn't hold properly then whack it up a notch. From memory there's room?

Thanks Happystamps you've been very helpful
