numberplate on your dash?

I've seen a few vans with there numberplates resting on the dashtop against the windscreen, is it legal to drive with it like that or are you just asking to get pulled?

cheers in advance!

it's illegal,

If you run a low van,

rather than keeping it on your dash, keep a mangled plate behind your seat if you get pulled tell the feds tell them it just got ripped off on a speed bump, they will at worse make you prove you have fixed it within 14 days

Not that I encourage such things.

P.s. I have my number plate on my front bumper, but just a bit smaller than it strictly legal.

thought it probably was but i think it looks loads cleaner without it sometimes, not worth the extra hassle though really is it!

I've never been pulled sue to my illegal plat, which is a sticker on my front bumper, you takes your chances, I would think if they want to pull you they would ;) Plate infrictions are £30 fines and not points offences, I believe???? I may be wrong.

my plate was on the dash when i got my MOT and the tester passed it, and said it was fine since it was visible. when you think about the number of illegal plates there are on the roads i think a legal and visible one in slightly the wrong place is low on the priorities list.

It is illegal, as it will not always be visible and wont be readable by apnr cameras etc.

Im not preaching, I run US plates which are also illegal, there are bigger crimes out there, but get the wrong copper on the wrong day and you 'could' get a fine. :)

I run mine in the windscreen, it is illegal, but can be made legal, the MOT states that it has to be fixed and as near to vertical as possible, so if you make a bracket that it fastned to the dash somehow that holds the plate vertical, then in theory it is legal.

MOT made me stick mine to the front for the MOT..then put it back on the dash!

I think they would most likely need probable cause to stop you - erratic driving, no seat belt etc

I would if I was stopped be very polite and take the fine, no need to antagonise - it is as stated illegal....

They do not probable cause. I was stopped with a slightly smaller plate on one of my cars a little while ago. Just driving up the M3 in traffic doing about 30mph minding my own business. I wasn't fined but had to change my plate and get an MOT station to sign that I was running a legal plate. Cost me a £5.

ok - I was saying most times they would need probable as they are busy and it's such a minor offence..were they stopping others for the same offence ?

I narrowly escaped a 150eu fine crossing the border into France last month! The only reason the copper let me away with it was he loved the bus! Also I cable tied it to the front bumper while he was watching and promised to bolt it on at the next gas station. I'm running stainless steel bumpers though and my drill can't make a dent! I'm done the double sided tape job for now but I'm also looking into getting a smaller "custom" plate because the standard one just doesn't sit right.

On the other side of the coin, if your van gets nicked and was to drive through a front facing ANPR camera, if it cant read your front plate it wont flag up as stolen.

Also, you would have to get pulled by a traffic copper at the end of the month when their figures are due, if they have been lazy for the month you will be getting a ticket.

Get a crafty sticker made, ;) On a chrome Bumper, it's a nice black and silver plate and almost legal, I've driven through 9 countries and done thousands of miles in europe and never had an issue.

Hey, I know this is not relevant to this discussion, but what colour is your bus? I'm getting mine re-sprayed in the spring and I'm not sure about changing or staying with the stock sierra yellow.

Thanks,
LV

RE: the colour...are you asking me or Jesus? Mine is cloud white over chianti, wanted to stick with the original colours for my bus...but I figure you are asking Jesus about his very nice shade of blue? Looks awesome doesn't it! Sorry I can't tell you what colour it is...will have to wait for the man himself to respond.

All the best with your new paint!

Brilliant Blue and Cloud White,

I too stuck with my factory colours,

I feel it was the only choice to make!

Cheers

Alex
