oil coming out of the dipstick?

hello, i have a problem, i have oil coming out of the dipstick, please help.. im guessing its some sort of pressure problem, im worried it may be a major problem.....can anyone help

Hi - does sound like crank case pressure - first question is what engine is it? Stock carbs? And does it have the oil take off on the filled cap? Piccies may help

The sump shouldn't be under any pressure at all - I'd be looking at doing a compression test to see if worn rings are allowing cylinder pressure to pass into the sump.
 
As above really. Need more info.

When did it start doing this.
What engine is it.
What's the level of the oil on the dipstick.
Is the engine stock
Are the carb/s and air cleaner stock

With more info I can give you advice but without it I would just be making wild guesses.
 
hi all thanks for the replies, i believe its a 1600cc flat four engine, with stock carb, a after market chrome dipstick, not sure about the oil question that was asked, its got new pisons , cams, and rings just a few months ago, the level of oil is half way in between the lines, when oil is low it stll pumps it out worse over longger drives..the oil in it is 10/40 sinthetic..it also misses abit especially low reves...

please have a look at the pic that shows what i think is a breather , which is a steel pipe with a bolt in it that i was told to put in when i put the engine back in not long ago, which is when i prety much had when the problem started

Oh dear!

All engines, not just these ones, must have a breather system.

Without a breather any engine will build up pressure in the crank case and oil will be forced out via the path of least resistance.

You have either mis understood the instructions given to you regarding the breather or the person who gave you the instruction to block the breather up is an idiot.

Ideally the breather pipe from the filler neck should be connected to the air cleaner.

One way of ensuring your engine runs well in all conditions is to ditch the pancake filter in the photo and revert to a stock air cleaner, correctly connected to both the breather and to the warm air pickup pipe.
 
Not to be rude of anything, but why the hell are you running the engine without the cooling tin ?
I would not worry sorting a dribble of oil from the dipstick cos your engine is not going to last very long without to cooling tin in place.

I strongly suggest that you try to get yourself some dual port head shrouds at a bare minimum, also read up on the cooling tin and buy replacement original tins where possible. Whoever sold you that engine or bus with that engine in, needs a kick as it is not fit for use as is. Then concentrate on getting it back to stock as much as possible (oil bath filter, stock filler neck and breather etc...).

There are lots of topics on cooling tin, please search the archives or speak to a knowledgeable local who can help you out.
 
...and also, get the fuel filter shifted from the engine bay to underneath the van too!
 
I did notice the lack of tinware but thought the photo was taken during the rebuild - it honestly never even occurred to me that somebody might be running the engine in this condition.

Using it in that state one might as well throw it away now rather than wait any longer :lol:

I do wonder if this is a wind up :mrgreen:
 
haha its not a wind up, i know next to nothing about engines, i do have all the tin ware and stock air filters and oil breathers, i am going by wing and a prayer, some info of here and lots of people telling me conflicting info..

so, best i fit all the tin ware to stop my engine cooking and back to stock on what i have is it?

is the bolt in the steel pipe effecting it as well or if not why is there a hole there for???

The bolt in the steel pipe is nothing to do with the breather system, it shouldnt be there and Ive no idea why it is, but just leave it and ignore that.

Most vital is the lack of engine tinware, seriously, the engine will over heat if driven anywhere like that :( the engine needs removing and building up again with tinware, its not something you can do without.

The oil leak may be down to do with lack of a breather, my guess is there may be an outlet undr the blue tape on the oil filler neck. Connect a pipe to that, you can connect the other end to the pipe stub on the air filter you have.

The fuel filter, as mentioned, isnt in an ideal place, move it to the tank outlet when you get the chance. :) But, I see there is at least one fuel hose clamp missing, thats not acceptable, and it looks like a fuel pipe is all rubber and is exiting over the rear of the engine, beware that chaffing may occur and split the pipe.

Honestly, this isnt people being precious over correct year parts or something insignificant, this is dangerous and you may catch fire and/or sieze up your engine. It needs re-doing before it should be driven again.

i live in south wales, approx 18 miles from cardiff, just before rhondda valleys cf30 8rf...even help like someone goning through it with me to make a list of the most important items to the least and some tips

Clem there is a breather under the blue tape, another thing i got told to do by a know it all type of person...cheers
 
I suggest that you never listen to that person's advice again.

Re instal all the tin wear, including the cylinder head deflector plates and get back to a stock set up as a priority. Running as is will damage the engine and cost you big time.

You are probably feeling right pissed off just now and wondering what the hell to do first. The advice offered on here has been spot on; I can honestly say that not because I am an expert (I am not) but because these guys are, and they have your best interests at heart. :D

If you don't feel confident and competent to do it yourself, ask for somebody to come over (don't drive it to them) to give your bus a once over. If nobody on here is close by, try contacting one of the recognised VW specialists listed here https://www.google.com/maps/mm?authuser=0&hl=en. They will, if necessary, pick it up and transport it to their workshop. It will cost you, but you will save your engine (and a few grand) in the long run. And you should have your pride and joy on the road in a matter of weeks.

Nice bus by the way. 8)
