Quick question! What's the best way to fix a screw hole through a petrol tank? The tank in question has been removed whilst I was trying to determine why the van stank of petrol with more than half a tank of fuel.

Is welding suitable in this case, or is there a better idea?

Cheers in advance.

Hi you need to be VERY careful if you are to weld a fuel tank as even when empty there is a build up of fumes that are very flammable
I think you would be safer using some sort of filler if it is only a small hole maybe "chemical metal" filler.

Dude, you can have my old solid tank for £25 if you want it. Nothing wrong with it at all, totally solid but the fuel sender I think broke so i took the whole thing out, when I went to buy a new sender which were like 50 quid someone on here was selling an almost new tank and sender for around that so my old tank is now just sitting in the back of my bus. Im only in Milton Keynes too so you could collect?

Drain the fuel, wash the tank out thoroughly and leave some water in it, weld it with great care....

not a job for the faint hearted as already said those fumes can get trapped...

if you try lighting the detergent bubbles that will give an indication as to what petrol vapour is trapped ....

Have a look at these products, there are others

Thanks for the offer cunning plan - the rest of the tank is in really good condition - less the screw hole - but if i fail I'll pm you. Thanks all for the suggestions - I'll let you know how it goes (so you know I haven't killed myself)

These people supply tank repair kits, not sure how bigger hole it will fix though.

Clarksons link ...... that petro putty works well a mate of mine had success with this on his bike tank.... gotta be worth a try if you would prefer to avoid the welding....

wouldnt bother welding it tbh - go with the above option of the tank putty / chemical metal etc.

the frost tank lining is just a thin paint so wouldnt do much to seal up the hole.
