Piston melted

Also check the studs and the heads carefully. On mine the heads were damaged too, because the hot cylinder expands and presses a ring into the head and also stresses the stud too much. Just saying to be careful and better spend a couple quid more now than to have to take it apart and spend more money again later on.

Sorry for my ignorance here or if I misunderstand

Are the plugs either short or long reach or the plug-holes in the head?

Both. The plug reach relates to the thread length in the head. They dont mix.

Its not a good idea to mix head types on the same engine. Both should be the same.

Thx guys

Yes I've been reading about different head manufactures and the numbers they use to identify themselves. There seems to be some discussion about the impact mixing them has, but I think what isn't in dispute is the need to know that both heads are completely undamaged, particularly the one on the side of the melted piston.

I live in north London and currently can't find any machine shops or head specialists without going south and over the river which is a real pain. I did post a request for any recommendations but haven't any responses yet. Anyway, will keep looking but I will need to have the heads checked before assembling with the new p&c's I've just ordered.

they are called http://www.thevwenginecompany.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and they have second hand parts change both or get another to match either the point is if you put a long reach in a short head you could possibly smash the fu...ck out of the piston and if you put a short reach in a long head the plug will probley over heat so do it right first time and don't listen to all the they do that don't they mugs
