I've recently bought a 68 bay and I also have a splitty. The splitty is nearing the end of a 13 month rebuild and now the bay takes over. The guy I bought it from has offered me first dibs on a 914 engine he has, what I want to know is has anyone else put one in there's? What's involved and is it a BIG job? Any info would be nice to help me consider buying it. :D

Thanks...

they had a type 4 engine in the 914 i think? a 1700? you want to put it in the 68? bit of a faff you'll need a fair few bits i wouldn't bother surely you'd be better off fitting a good type 1.

Thanks, don't mind the "Faffing" as I would be paying someone to do that bit. Just getting the idea if its worth the extra effort for them.

i'm sure it's been done as some of your later earlies had 1700 type 4's in i think? but an upright engine will have a different set up in the engine bay for the tinware etc and engine hangers will be different, plus the gearbox may not match up? i'm not sure exactly what you'll need but hopefully someone will help, you also need to make sure the 914 engine is much the same as the van type 4 engine, for a start the tinware will be different i'd guess and the layout may be different due to space constraints...... i'll keep an eye on the thread though as it interests me but i'm out of ideas now, good luck!

you really need to convert it to upright cooling, as the fan housing will kinda hang out the back of the van!!

But then you can do things like this... ;)

Yum yum!! I like the look of that baby...Sweeeet! :p :p tell me more! Would it be a massive expense to have it rebuilt prior to fitting? Just that I don't know the history of it. What would the cost implications be having it fitted (Roughly?)....

 piece of string question dude... depends on rebuild spec...basic rebuilds range from £1200 to £2500... porsche cooling adds and extra £1000 if you can find a sensibly priced porsche impellar... then fitting would be an extra £300ish

still wanna "faff"? i'd get a nice tuned type 1 and forget the porsche 914 and spend the change on sweets.

Unfortunately uprighting a type 4 isn't cheap... porsche cooling requires the case to be machined, and no one does cheap parts for the type 1 cooling conversion...

CSP sell fibre-glass 'top-tins' for a type 1 fan-shroud conversion...about £300 and includes the pedesatal adaptor for the generator.

Of google 'Joe Cali' type 4 engine conversion : he produces a small book detailing all of the adaptions you have to make to fit the type4 in place of a type using re-cycled German tinware.

Or look up the DTM cooling system sold by Jake Raby (designed by Joe Locicero at Oregon Performance) : My Type4 has one of these and has ran OK - Joe supplied me though, when he was alive - not Jake.

The Porsche style fans are crap, I mentioned it to my engine builder and he refuses to use them on any motor he builds. In an early you can't beat a decent type 1 motor with stock cooling.

Jake Raby over in the USA has (allegedly) proven the crapness of the Porsche cooling on a Beetle / Type4 motor.
Porsche cooling is designed for Porsche 6 cylinders, after all.

Some people seem to like the look.! :)

Type1 (Beetle) cooling does work on a Type4 rally well : once installed.
If you can weld, and have access to spare tinware then the Joe Cali method works a treat.
