I saw a cartoon on the paper today
A picture of vw in garage with caption
"I think weve found the problem and I think we are looking at 18 billion plus parts and labour! :)

aye, id hate to be one of the top brass at VW right about now..... i bet their shirt collars feel mighty tight!

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out and who knew about it.

From my brief experience of working in Germany I would guess that someone pretty high up knew about this and OK'd it.

Agreed. Though the way things work in "corporate" it's likely the person responsible will get away with it by arranging for a lower minion to fall on their sword in exchange for a substantial reward. Of course if there are criminal charges then that might not be so easy.

The thing that beggars belief is that those people who took this decision were in such responsible positions and yet clearly did not care about the integrity or reputation of their company.

I guess it's what happens when you employ whizz kids driven by self interest rather than loyal people in the company for the long term.

I am staggered at the naive stupidity of those who took the decision to cheat since anybody who knows anything about the motor industry would know that there are people and independent companies constantly testing out vehicles and trying to improve them or tune them to make them go faster etc. Hence it is an inevitable certainty that any tweaks to the cars systems will be found sooner or later.

I suspect there is chance VW are not alone in playing this irresponsible and stupid game.

It will not just cost them a fortune directly in costs and fines, the damage to their reputation will cost them sales in the longer term that are hard to quantify.

Its hitting hard already. My bro works as a service manager for a main dealer. Car orders have been cancelled by some buyers, customers calling about refunds compensation, recallas etc. He gets gets a share scheme bonus and was due a payout in November ... the projected amount is crashing at the mo :(

Im guessing, like many other of these scandals, other car companies will be next so the single impact to VW will level out.

If it turns out to be 'diesel specific' the japanese will be OK as they sell relatively few diesels in the US.

If Mercedes and BMW have pulled the same stunt then the German car industry's reputation will be toast.

I'd guess that there will be pressure for an independent organisation, a sort of 'Which', to test the cars in the future.
