Just wanted to ask if anyone knows where to get really good quality USA black and yellow california number plates from?

i last bought some from craigs plates?? i think thats what it was called and they wernt very good, thin, all of the extra lettering was stuck on with sticky labels, and for an extra cost of £8, wasnt very impressed!!

i'm just after some Back and yellow pressed plates that display my number plate, and say california above it, just like they do in the states.

I've done some online searches, and turned up with quite a few, but thats what i did last time and ended up with some expensive duffers, where have you lot bought em from and what was the quality like?

any help would be cooool

cheers

Displaying Black & Yellow plates in this country is illegal, they need to black & white to get through an MOT, American style plates are frowned on a bit even when they are just B&W as they are not the right size, that said lots of people run them (and so have I) within US surrounds on the premise that its the size originally fitted to the vehicle but not all MOT/Police officers are that lenient, I would say that running with Black & Yellow ones is asking for trouble.

Hi Graham,

i hear what your saying, and i know that they are illegal in the UK but they do look cool, i have run all sorts of plates on my previous dubs, some have been REALLY crazy foriegn looking plates, and have never had any problems, thats not to say that i'll never have any problems, guess i've been lucky, i usually have some UK ones in the car at all times just incase. I usually have them so that they can either slip into the surround, or be fitted in seconds so that i am ultra co-oprative road side if i ever have and problems.

i didnt have any plates on my bus for my mot because it wasnt registered in the uk, but i always put my MOT plates on come test time.

where did you get your "show" plates from Graham? where they good quality?

Last time I was in Cali the plates on the car were blue with yellow not black.

Being a real nerd now.....

1963 - early 1970 - Plates were Black with 'Chrome' Yellow lettering
1970 - 1982 - Blue Plates with 'Chrome' yellow lettering
1982 - 1987 - White plates with 'Sun' background
1987 - 1993 - As above no Sun background
1993 onward - 'California' now in 'script.

May be of help to someone.

May have to get some myself, those on windsurfers bus look cooler than the US style white on black on my bus, parked behind in the photo (toddler standing in front).

Leon, you camera shy??!!

nice pic of your bus winsurfer, looks like a tidier narrower version of mine!!

my mate in Cali says the black and yellow plates are for all of cali, and were on vehicles up to a certain year (cant remeber which year) then after that they were blue and yellow, also, any vehicle still on a black and yellow plate means it has never left the state and been registered in any other state.

As posted before......colours were year related.....rather than location.

No wonder I have no friends!

It is my understanding that a bus with a blue back ground and yellow letters is a bus which has been registered in califorina all it's life.It has never been out of califorina, regardless of age .A lot of people sell buses stating they are from califorina,a dry state , but really they are from other state's, then registered in califorina and sold as a dry califorina bus.

Fair enough, I love the back and yellow!
Pete, go for it!

i wouldnt bother with them... ive been done for US plates.... hefty fine and kind of takes the shine off having them on ya bus.... mine never went back on after.... waste of money (but if youre intersted i got mine from 'states plates')

i prefer the black and alu silver british look....but then hey.... mine is a UK RHD which is uber rare anyway!!!!

You sir, are correct.

I think that only a '68 or a '69 bay window would have black plates. 1970 was the first year of blue plates.

Here's a picture from last Sunday at the Sacramento Bug-O-Rama, you could have taken your pick!

I did this on the last California plate thread too.
