raising the front on adjusters urgent help needed

I have a standard front beam with adjusters welded in. I am in the middle of trying to raise the front a little. I have undune the nuts and they are well clear of the serated plates but the plates won't come apart. Is this because they are under tension and it needs a good wack, if this is the case will everything drop as the serations seperate or is it just that it needs abit of WD40 and some encouragement.
