This rip off from thread my friend wrote to Finnish Volkswagen Assocoation Forum, but definitely what I'll do to my '71 after I get myself off the sofa / net smurfing / nose picking (maybe in 20xx?...).

So rear disc brakes to early bay on 5x112 PCD

Parts needed:

* Mercedes Benz 190 (Body W201 '83-'93) front discs (non vented), 24 mm turned off from diameter, new spares cost about 18€/£10 each
* Calipers from rear of Opel/Wauxhall Asstra (G model) '02 Caravan (has parking brakes), €€££ of salvage? New ones are pricey.
* Custom Adapters, lasercut own design (THE HARD PART), I'll get 3D file soon. I will not producing these for sale, sorry.
* Long Early bay parking brake cables (don't know if there's difference between years of EB?)

MB disc has the same PCD and goes right on the Bay rear hub!

I know, this sounds all too easy (exept the custom caliper bracket). I'll report after I've done this myself.

Negative point, might be tight fit with 14" wheel. See the caliper grinded slightly on the photo.

looks very clever. excuse my ignorance... but whats an MB 190?

im watching this one for sure.

Sorry. MB = the other lady from Stuttgart = Mercedes Benz. W201 = more commonly know as 190 model, atleast here in Finland.

Just looked at this thread, will be doing it asap :D ,Doesn't look like it will affect track much if anything just a couple of mm where the disc might be slightly thicker than the face of drum where it bolts to hub.
So if anyone wants brand new drums, shoes, slave cylinders and back plates i'll have some for a 72 coming up for sale very soon.

Oh yeah of course it's the original bay hub, i forgot they are seperate from the drum (i dont mess with many late buses  ), i'd need to fit an adapter to get it back up to wide 5 if i was doing it and that would push the wheel out too far as it's already close to the arch... shame!

Nice one Tipi - I love this sort of work, it looks like a straightforward fix if you're lucky enough to own a 'late Early' (I am!) - keep us informed (and get those 3D drawings posted) 8) 8) 8)

;)

Just been looking into this a bit more if you use the 01> 1.8 16v calipers you dont need to machine disc's down, but the bracket will need to be slightly adjusted.

Nellybus can you specify which make/model 1.8 16V caliper you mean? And these calipers would fit into 14" wheel without machining the disc, right?

It would be the vauxhall/opel astra 1.8 16v but i'm not sure you'd be able to use 14" wheel's, I'm running 17" wheel's so it's not a prob for me :D

Err so if the eighties MB 190 has a 'wide five' pattern it begs the question about using the front disks/hub as a cheap front disk option ?

I had toyed wth using the disks and hub I have off a late bay but carrying two spare wheels has always put me off. That and laziness.

Cheers

Anyone considered doing this with Merc Sprinter parts? 5x130 for Porsche wheels

AH... they are pretty common over here too.

Not on my side, bracket files have been at the lasercutter for about two months now... :?

Have you got any sketches or drawings of the caliper bracket

I would like to get this conversion startrd ASAP.....looks cool

Anyone tried this yet?

Could do with some caliper bracket drawings if anyone can help

cheers

Sorry guys, I've been so busy last month that I've hardly opened my computer at home (where I can reach the file on FTP). I'll post some files this weekend.
