For Sale

A rare opportunity has arisen to buy this 1968 unmolested Westfalian / Safare conversion.
Due to a new business venture i have very reluctantly decided to sell my 68 hightop which has twice featured in Camper & Commercial and Dave Eccles book The Inside Story.
Built in Jan 1968 as a walkthrough Kombi under the tourist Export Scheme this bus ended up spending most of its life in the dry climate around Los Angles California.

I bought this bus from a good friend Rich Ducharme and drove it from Vancover to LA importing it myself. Anyone who uses Early Bay will probably have noticed the quality of Vehicles that enthusiast Rich enjoy's working on and owning.
BIG RED arrived in the UK in spring 2012 and has been used for Family summer trips and dry stored during the winter.

What makes Big Red toatally unique is the Westfalia camping interior and the Safare roof, converted by Safare Campers of Paramont of California.
Still in its original paint this van has never been welded or lowered  and drives like when it left the factory. The primer down the door was discovered by Rich while T cutting the original Montana Red it was a slight repair years ago probably due to the wind catching the door. Absolute no rust or rot anywhere. Both Rich and i decided to leave it rather than add any new paint. All the small scuffs and dings add to the history and charm to this cool patina bus.
I could write pages about this one off van but i will let the photo's tell the story.
Thanks for looking !

Please no silly offers !!

I'm not much of a post whore but I will pipe in here and say a few things about this van. This van is as solid as it comes. It was from Hollywood, California. To find a van with as much character as this without the rot is exponentially impossible. There is ZERO rot on this bus. The front floors and cargo floors are perfect red paint!!!! Original battery trays. No rot under the windscreen. I can't stress how solid this van is. The body is nice and strait. It has an all original interior that is in beautiful shape with correct colour curtains including the hightop "penthouse" windows

It was built using top quality and original parts. No cheap offshore stuff. Just a few of the highlights that I can think of are as follows when it was completed:

-new ball joints
-new track rods
-new drag link
-new center pin
-new steering damper
-all new brakes (including lines, cylinders, pads, drums turned etc)
-new correct load rated tires
-nos wipers
-new windscreen and seal
-refurbished rear axles with new axle boots
-new engine mounts
-rebuilt motor
-rebuilt fuel pump
-new distributor
-new "Bosch" alternator
-new muffler
-new clutch
-resealed transmission

and the list can go on and on!

I do have pics of when the bus was taken apart that I could send for SERIOUS buyers.

I feel very confident in saying that you will not find a van with this much character that is as solid anywhere....period!!

Thanks for the tech input Rich ! Not my strongest point :)

It's is the Safare roof without the bunk so more storage space! There is the cab bunk over the steering wheel !
Thanks for your interest !
