steering box leak

I started cleaning up my steering box "was covered in old dry oil" yesterday.
Went to have another go at it today and its leaking oil from the joint in the two halfs.
Will it be ok to remove the four bolts split the box and re seal with some joint gasket :?: .
Or is there some thing I should be aware of when splitting the two halfs.Like the adjusting screw,do I have to remove it/will it come off with the case when split..............All help much appreciated as there not a cheap part to replace .......Cheers..Dave

On this note, what oil goes into the steeringbox? The manual says hypoid oil but i got a funny look at halfords, they have oils but they seem to be classified as grade 80/90.

Yep Hypoid and Halfrauds employs tools it may be designated extreme pressure gearbox oil.....

(it may have EP90 or similar on the bottle)

Well the bolt tightening didn't work,although they moved just less than a quarter of a turn.So off it came

Scraped the faces clean and Hylomar gasket glued back together

Hi Guys,
Don’t mean to hijack :msn4:
I have read some wisdom on this matter “Steering box can leak when rust gets between the adjusting shims in the lower cap if you can live with slow drip, top it with gear oil every few months”.
I believe this is my case.

I just wonder if there is another way to deal with this kind of leak that doesn’t required taking off the steering box
