Ok I know I won't get my steering wheel off by hand so what I need is the tool
to remove it. Is the tool one of those tripod type pullers or is there a specific tool
for the job? any pictures of the correct tool or where to get one from would help.
Thanks Andy

  I gave up several years ago & took my bus to Manchester Air cooled who did it for me.
I just like to do things myself but in the correct manner.

I went for the drench in GT85, leave overnight, undo nut upto the top of the tube, cushion, rubber mallet to tap either side, accompanied by gorilla style rocking side to side......and then the centre fell apart around the cracks....

It did come off though. A hub puller with suitable length arms I am guessing you are after by the description.

Good luck :)

Hi!

I had my wheel off last week, it went really easy, but probably very lucky, as they do seen to be awkward to shift.

I used some penetrating spray on the threads, my nut that that holds it on wasn't that tight to be honest, and with some rocking side by side whilst pulling upwards, and up it came!

Remember to screw the nut on the last few threads, otherwise you are likely to smack yourself in the face.

Other people have poured boiling water over the top of the threads to help loosen and heat it up.

I did try my puller, but it will break and chip off the plastic as the plastic sits a little lower than the metal on the wheel. Plus the center of the puller tgends to catch the horn wire if you cant push it out of the way.
It a thickish metal ring was made to fit under the wheel so the puller can fit on that it may stop it cracking.

Hopefully you may have luck on your side like i did, one of the few i think.

Good luck!

heres mine i made it from the end of a swing axle spring plate i had lying around , it works well and i still have a straight nose !! it didnt crack or chip the wheel not bad for free !!
a three prong puller on its own will chip the wheel .

I removed my after market EMPI wheel by pouring boiling water into the cup around the spline. I did it a few times, drying out with a rag each time the water cooled, then set about rocking and pulling the wheel free. I was sweating profusely by the time it came off but it worked. I'm not sure if the standard wheel has the same "cup" design but be sure not to pour water onto the steering column itself else it will all start to expand together (you basically want the wheel to expand more than than the column...)
